Gerald Lyle Alderman Arkport Gerald Lyle Alderman, 65, of Arkport, NY, passed away peacefully on Saturday, January 23, while visiting family in Houston, TX. Born in Bath on June 16, 1950, to Floyd and Dorotha Alderman, Gerry grew up near Haskinville and graduated from Avoca Central School. He enlisted in the United States Marine Corps and served in Vietnam from 1969 to 1971, for which he was awarded two Purple Hearts. After his time in the service, he earned a pilot’s license and dusted crops with both helicopters and airplanes. For more than thirty years, Gerry’s gray and yellow bi-plane was a familiar sight (and sound) around western New York State, particularly in Steuben and Allegheny counties. He retired from flying in 2008. Gerry is survived by his wife, Melodie, of Arkport to whom he was married in 2005, and by her children Jeffery Dailey, who lives in Los Angeles, CA, with his wife Danielle and their children Griffin and Lilah, and Kelly Wemett, who lives in Penfield with her husband Brian and their children Chloe and Kiya. He is also survived by two sons, David Alderman, who lives in Houston with his wife Sarah and their children, Dawson, Owen and Weston, and Isaac Alderman who lives in Providence, RI with his wife Christina. In addition to far too many nieces, nephews and cousins to list, he is survived by his siblings Richard (Gerry) Alderman of Houghton, Caroline (Lloyd) Prentice of Scottsville, Bruce (Erin) Alderman of Wallace, Patricia (Robert) Krein of Greenville, SC, and Deborah (Phillip) Wilson of Bath. He was predeceased by his parents, his brother Brian Alderman, and sister Jean Pawling. Family members will be present on Saturday for calling hours from 2 – 4 and 7 – 9 pm. The funeral service, officiated by Rev. Ken Chroniger, will be held on Sunday at 11 am. Both the calling hours and funeral will be held at the Bender – Brown & Powers Funeral home , 354 Canisteo Street, Hornell. The burial will be at the Bath National Cemetery on Monday at 11 am. Memorial contributions can be made to the Arkport Legion Scholarship Fund.
