Elizabeth J. Martin Canisteo Elizabeth J. Martin, 84, of 5501 State Route 36, and a resident of McAuley Manor, passed away peacefully, Thursday (February 4, 2016) at St James Mercy Hospital. Born in Hornell, February 10, 1931, the daughter of Frederick and Lillian (Rennells) McCarthy, she was a lifelong area resident. She graduated from the former St. Ann’s School in Hornell, and went on to earn her LPN license at BOCES. Betty was a dedicated Nurse, starting her career in local area nursing homes, and had worked for the former Bethesda Hospital, and later retired from St. James Mercy Hospital. She was a communicant of the former St. Joachim’s Roman Catholic Church in Canisteo, was a current communicant of Our Lady of the Valley Parish, and attended St. Ann’s Church. Betty enjoyed going to the Casinos to play the slots, she loved animals, and was a huge Atlanta Braves fan, with Chipper Jones being her favorite player. She was predeceased by her parents, and her husband Forest D. Martin on December 1, 1998, whom she married April 14, 1951. She is survived by 2 daughters Dona Mulhair of Canisteo, and Charlotte Tackett of Canisteo, 5 grandchildren, several great grandchildren, and 1 great great grandchild, her step brother Ivan Freeman of MA, her sister Teresa Whitney of PA, her best friends Charlotte Andrews, and Lois Stiles, along with many other friends. She was a kind and compassionate person, who always was willing to help anyone in need. The family will be present 2-4 & 7-9 PM Wednesday, February 10, 2016, at the Brown & Powers Funeral Home, 6 Spruce Street in Canisteo. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Ann Roman Catholic Church on Thursday at 2:00 PM. Burial will be at Hillside Cemetery in Canisteo.
