Sawyer S. Korb – 20 – of 7 Hakes Ave., Hornell, died unexpectedly Saturday evening (April 20, 2013) at his home.

Born in Dansville on May 23, 1992, he was the son of Wendy (Creech) Korb and Russell Korb.

Sawyer grew up in Arkport and attended Arkport Central School through his sophomore year.  While living in Arkport, he played soccer and excelled on the baseball field.  Sawyer was a gifted pitcher in the Arkport Junior Baseball League, the Hornell Babe Ruth Baseball League and as a member of the Arkport High School (Blue Jays) Baseball Team.  During his sophomore year, Sawyer received the Outstanding Citizen Award.

He resided in Wellsville during his junior & senior years where, again he played soccer and pitched for the Wellsville Lions Baseball Team.  As a senior, Sawyer helped pitch Wellsville to a Section V championship and into the state tournament. In just two seasons he was 15-5 and his 137 strikeouts his senior year is second all-time in school history. Sawyer was named the MVP on defense his senior year, a Big 30 All-Star and an all-state selection.

Sawyer attended Finger Lakes Community College in Canandaigua for 2 years where, once again, he excelled as a pitcher on the baseball team.  He was scouted by several Major League Baseball Teams including the New York Yankees.  He was hoping to further his education and his pitching career at Mansfield University.

As much as Sawyer excelled on the baseball field, he will undoubtedly be remembered for his ever-present smile, “happy-go-lucky” attitude and his wonderful sense of humor.  He seemed to take on the role of “Big Brother” to his many friends and was always willing to lend a helping hand to anyone in need.  He will be sadly missed by everyone that had the good fortune of knowing him!

Sawyer was preceded in death by his maternal grandmother, Patricia Novara.

Surviving are his mother, Wendy Korb of Hornell; his father, Russell Korb of Syracuse; 3 brothers, Sgt. Justin (Irania) Korb of Ft. Drum, Watertown, NY, Skylar Korb of Hornell and Austin Korb of Hornell; his maternal grandfather, Eugene Creech of Skaneateles; paternal grandmother, Donna Korb of Tallahassee, FL; 2 nephews, Dylan Korb and Nathaniel Korb; 1 niece, Justine Korb; several aunts & uncles.

The family of Sawyer S. Korb will receive friends on Wednesday from 4:00 PM – 7:00 PM at the Dagon Funeral Home, 38 Church St., Hornell, NY where a Memorial Service will be held at the conclusion of calling hours at 7:00 PM with Rev. Mason Sorensen officiating.

Sawyer’s family request that memorial contributions in his name be made to the Hornell YMCA Pool Fund, 18 Center St., Hornell, NY 14843.  Memorial forms will be available at the Dagon Funeral Home.
