Wendell E. Taft Hornell/Oxford Wendell E. Taft, 87, formerly of Hornell, passed away Monday (April 28, 2014) at the New York State Veterans Home in Oxford, NY. Born in Woodhull, April 11, 1927, the son of Erwin and Susie Davis Champlin, he had resided most of his life in the Hornell area and served his country in the United States Navy from 1946 until 1954. In his early years he helped to maintain the Maplewood Cemetery in Alfred Station along with his brother. He had been employed at the Erie and Conrail Railroads for many years and was instrumental in establishing the Steamtown Railroad Museum in Pennsylvania. Wendell had also worked at the Almond Sand & Gravel Company. He was predeceased by his wife Jane and one brother Howard Taft, one great grandson, David Harrahuf. He is survived by two sons, Stephen M. Taft of Little York and Fred Taft of FL, three daughters, Sheila Taft of Homer, Kelly Krause and Melinda Willard both of TX, one sister, Joyce Champlin of Webster, one granddaughter and eight grandsons, two great granddaughters and four great grandsons. DuBois, director at the Robertson Funeral Home in Hornell. A graveside service will be held on Saturday, May 3, 2014 at 1Pm at the Maplewood Cemetery in Alfred Station.
