Carlyle E. “Carl” Mills Jr. Jasper Carlyle E. “Carl” Mills Jr., 63, of 2469 Hunter Hill Road, passed away Saturday (June 21, 2014) at his home. Born in Wellsville, January 18, 1951, the son of Carlyle E. Mills Sr. and Anna (Guild) Mills he had resided most of his life in the Hornell-Canisteo area and in Jasper since 1987. Carl had served his country as a member of the United States Navy during the Vietnam Era serving aboard the USS Shangri-La and the USS Laffey. He retired in March 2014, after over 30 years of service with Phillips Lighting in Bath. One of Carl’s favorite hobbies was his participation in the Japanese Martial Arts, “Hakko-Ryu Ju-Jutsu”. He had been awarded the 2nd degree black belt status, and had received the rank of Sensai. He had also been an instructor in martial arts in the area for several years. Carl loved horses and was a member of the Morgan Horse Association. He was a member of the Board of Directors of the Woodlawn Cemetery Association in Canisteo and served as superintendent of grounds at the cemetery for several years. He will be fondly remembered for the excellent care he gave to the cemetery during those years. He was predeceased by his parents. He is survived by his wife, Michelle Nye Mills of Jasper, his daughters, Angela (Gregory) Greene of Hampton Virginia, Heather Mills of Canisteo and Andrea Mills of Jasper, his sons, Cory (Jennifer) Mills stationed with the US Navy at the Norfolk Naval Station in Virginia Beach, and Jacob (Holly) Borden, stationed with the US Army at Ft. Drum in Watertown, his brother, Justin Mills of Horseheads and his sisters, Lois (Steven) Olix of Hornell, Cathy (Sy) Thomas of North Carolina, Sue Diaber of Ohio and Jessica Mills of Mt. Morris, 13 grandchildren, Chandler Greene, Christopher Greene, Kady Mills-Lewis, Kristian Rice, Kameron Mills, Jacob George, Kendra Fullmer, Brandon Mills, Leila Mills, Kailynn Mills, Pheobe Borden, Keira Borden and Destiny Campbell as well as several nieces and nephews. Burial with Military Honors will be at Woodlawn Cemetery in Canisteo.
