Kay D. Smith BELFAST – Kay Diane Covert Smith, 82, passed away September 11, 2014, at the Hart Comfort House in Wellsville, after a recent diagnosis of cancer. She was born in Cuba, NY, on September 2, 1932, the daughter of Francis M. and Myrna E. Schenck Covert. On December 27, 1951 she married Robert Francis Smith, who predeceased her April 1, 1977. Kay was a graduate of Belfast Central School, class of 1950. She worked at the school for 27 years as a teacher aide and librarian aide. She also served as a NYSUT union official for the school’s non-teaching personnel, and as a ticket seller at many school sporting events. A former election inspector for the Town of Belfast and member of the Belfast Area Betterment Association, she was currently a member of St. Patrick’s Roman Catholic Church and its Altar and Rosary Society, as well as the Crafty Belles. Known as a talented craftsperson and seamstress, Kay was also an avid reader, gardener, and baker, and enjoyed watching baseball and playing cards and games. Most of all, she loved her family and pets. Kay is survived by her children, Laura L. Norton of Wellsville, Robin K. (Paul) Robbins of Angelica, Joseph V. (Roberta) Smith of Blue Ridge Summit, PA, Silas J. (Kathryn) Smith of Belmont, and Monica D. (David) Cole of Belfast; grandchildren, Jason Norton of Ft. Lauderdale, FL, Robert Norton of Baltimore, MD, Kerri (David) Davis of Angelica, CW2 Kevin (Janet) Smith of Korea, Sara (Keith) Bunce of Bradford, PA, Jacob Cole of Celoron, CPT Alexander (Kelli) Smith of Ft. Rucker, AL, and Matthew Smith of Blue Ridge Summit; great-grandchildren, Parker and Alayna Davis, and Lillyan Bunce; sisters, Doris Carney and Janice Covert. In addition to her parents and husband, Kay was predeceased by three sisters, Bernice Atherton Meyers, Jean LaDue Hosmer, and Thelma Sauer; and her four brothers, Merlyn, Marvin, Donald, and Gerald Covert. Family and friends will be received at Brown and Powers Funeral Home, 101 West Avenue, Angelica from 4:00 pm to 8:00 pm on Friday, September 19. The Rosary will be recited at 7:30 pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 10:00 am on Saturday, September 20, at St. Patrick’s Roman Catholic Church, Belfast, with the Rev. Dennis Mancuso as celebrant. A brief private graveside service for immediate family will follow at the Holy Cross Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions to the Hart Comfort House, 141 E.
