Beverlee Sue Loper “The Hat Lady” Beverlee Sue Loper, 83, longtime resident of Hartsville, Canisteo and Hornell, passed away early Sunday morning (September 20, 2015) at Highland Park Rehabilitation and Nursing Center in Wellsville where she had resided the past year. . Born in Hornell, NY, November 10, 1931, the daughter of Leonard and Almeda Curtis Hargraves, she was a graduate of Alfred Almond Central School where she enjoyed being a member of the cheerleading team for 3 years. In 1961 she graduated from the Rochester Beauty School, and opened a beauty shop in Canisteo which she operated for several years. She served as Hartsville Town Clerk for five years before moving to Canisteo, She served as court clerk for 22 years for her husband, Justice Donald H. Loper Sr. in the Town of Hartsville, the Village of Canisteo as well as the Town of Canisteo. Beverlee had been employed as a physical and recreational therapist at the former Craig Colony in Sonyea and later as a physical therapy aide at St. James Mercy Hospital. Later, she was employed by the Canisteo School District as a substitute secretary, and school bus driver. She also drove the HAT Bus for the City of Hornell. She was named Steuben County Senior Citizen of the year in 1996. She was a past member of the Canisteo and Hartsville Historical Society , the Bath and Hornell Republican Club, President of the Canisteo Senior Citizens Group, member and former Chaplain for the Canisteo Grange #460, and a member of the Canisteo Wesleyan Church. Beverlee enjoyed woodworking, hunting, interior decorating, crocheting, snowmobiling , listening to country music, baking for other people and was an avid reader. After retirement, she and her husband Don traveled the United States in their motor home for two years, an experience that brought them joy, and beautiful memories. She was predeceased by her parents, her husband Donald H. Loper Sr in 2008, her son Donald H. Loper Jr. in 1996 and her sister, Virginia McKnight. She is survived by her son, Curtis (Dawnne) Loper of Wellsville, her sister, Mary Ellen Griffo of Livonia and her brother, Lawrence Hargraves of Henderson, Nevada, her Daughter-In-Law, Nancy (The late Donald ) Loper of Hornell, eight grandchildren, Curtis (Ashley) Loper Jr. Lindsay Loper, Joshua (Lisa) Brott, Rhonda (Mark) Willsey, Michael Brott, Jennifer, Kristy and Darcy, Nine great grandchildren, Miles Donald Loper, Megan, Matthew, Anthony, Alexandria, Josiah, Jake, Lindsey and Zachary, nieces and nephews.
