Jack O. Aber Canisteo Jack O. Aber, 87, of 5281 State Route 248, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family Friday (October 23, 2015) at the Hornell Gardens where he had resided since August. Born in Canisteo, September 16, 1928, the son of Laverne and Dorothy Ordway Aber, he had resided in Canisteo all his life. He attended Canisteo Central School, and was a graduate of the Class of 1947. After graduation, he attended Alfred State College, and obtained his electrician license in 1949. He was a member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Union Local 139 for 67 years. He worked for the union as an electrician for 42 years before retiring in 1990. Jack had many hobbies and interests including ham radio operator, gun collector, and target shooter. He also received his instrument technician diploma from the Spartan School of Aeronautics and was a small plane pilot for several years. Jack was a member of Morning Star Lodge #65 F&AM of Canisteo. He enjoyed traveling to Las Vegas for many years after his retirement and had a great love of the latest technology and always owned the latest Apple product. Jack, affectionately called “Obediah”, and served his country as a member of the United States Army during the Korean Conflict. He was predeceased by his parents, his brother Richard Aber in 1961, as well as his wife, the former Joyce Elaine Preston of Canisteo in March of 2008. They had been married since February 25, 1961. He is survived by three daughters. Kathleen (Timothy) Harkenrider of Canisteo, Karen Grillo of Hornell, and Kristine (Don) Allen of Coopers Plains, seven grandchildren, Paul and Julia Harkenrider of Canisteo, Bailey Grillo, Jacquelyn (Mike) Thayer and Lucia Grillo all of Hornell, and Sarah and Jordan Allen of Coopers Plains, 3 great grandchildren, Hayden Grillo, Jack Thayer and Corra Barr all of Hornell. The family will be present to receive friends at the Brown & Powers Funeral Home, 6 Spruce St., Canisteo on Tuesday from 6PM until 8 PM. Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery, Canisteo at the convenience of the family. Friends may make memorial contributions to: The Charity of the donor’s choice.
