Winifred A. “Bina” Robinson Swain Winifred A. “Bina” Robinson, 92, passed away Saturday (November 21, 2015) at the Leo Center for Caring Hospice in Rochester, surrounded by her family. Born in Schenectady, August 31, 1923, the daughter of Thomas and Winifred Binless Aitchison, she resided in Swain since 1946. Bina earned her Bachelor’s degree in English and History (cum laude) from the University of Rochester in 1944 and married David Robinson, a 1943 graduate, on the afternoon of her graduation on May 14, 1944. After Dave’s service in World War II ended they created Swain Ski Slopes – which they ran for over three decades – literally cutting the original trails with hand axes all while holding down full-time jobs to pay the bills. In 2007 Bina published a full length novel, “With Our Own Four Hands” – the true story of this experience. Avid hikers, they trekked in Nepal, the Dolomites, Peru, Andorra, the English Lakes District and the American southwest. In recent decades Bina became best known for her dedicated work and editorials on animal & human welfare, human health, and environmental issues. In addition to her parents Bina was pre-deceased by her husband David in 2001. She is survived by one son, Andrew (Sonja) Robinson of Swain, three daughters, Challice Robinson of Swain, Jeanie (James) Robinson-Pownall of Coatesville, PA, and Janet Robinson (Michael Evans) of Swain; seven grandchildren: David and Colin Robinson, Matthew (Cara) and Bethany James, Ariel Bailey, Jameson Pownall and Jennifer (Cody) Guepet, and one great-grandson, Michael James Guepet; as well as one sister, Elizabeth Bruggeman of Richmond, MA and two nieces and a nephew. In lieu of flowers friends may make memorial contributions to the Abbe-Freeland Animal Sanctuary, 8104 Terwilliger Rd., Angelica, NY 14709-8711.
