Carl DeForest O’Dell, 86, of Maple Court Homes, passed into eternal rest in our Father’s home Friday (December 27, 2013) after a long illness fighting cancer.
Born in Jasper, NY, October 20, 1927, the son of Frank and Della Jackson O’Dell, he had resided his early life in Jasper. Carl spent some time in Florida, but mostly in the Hornell area.
Carl was known as a renowned chef and auto body worker. He was owner and manager of the former Jumbo’s Restaurant in Hornell, and was involved in auto body work with his brother Jerry, in Avoca. He was an expert at wood handicrafting and helped many friends and families with building and renovating their homes. For many years, Carl planted tomato seeds and canned tomatoes for family and friends. He also organized the O’Dell Family Reunion which brought many laughs and fun, especially during the auction. “Really Good Times”.
He was predeceased by his parents, his sisters and brothers-in-law Delores and Rodney Smith, Gladys and Gordon Prutsman, Agnes and Chet DeKay, and Beverly and Pete Miles, and his brothers, Francis O’Dell, Ronald O’Dell and his wife Ella as well as his brother-in-law, Cloice Brizzee.
He is survived by his former wife, Waneta C. O’Dell, who remained good friends throughout the years right up to his passing, his three devoted sons, Calvin(Kellie) O’Dell of Greenwood, Bruce (Patrica Kent) O’Dell of Hornell, and Dennis (fiancé Mary Andrews) of Canisteo, his sister, Paula Brizzee, his brother, Gerald (Donna) O’Dell of Wildwood, Florida, his grandchildren, Richard(Sarah) of Kansas, Tonya of Andover, Kyle of Wellsville, Nicholas of Hornell, Rene of Virginia and Shawna of Greenwood, Also surviving are eight Great Grandchildren, several nieces and nephews.

The family will be present to receive friends on Monday from 1 -3 PM and 6-8 PM at the Bender – Brown & Powers Funeral Home, 354 Canisteo St, Hornell where funeral services will follow calling at 8 PM. Elaine Brown will officiate. Burial will be in Jasper Cemetery.
