James A. Shutt Hornell James Allen Shutt, a well-known Hornellian and great American patriot went to God’s door Sunday (March 2, 2014) at 4:28Am. Jim was born Aug. 2, 1946 in Hornell. If you are a Hornellian yourself and are unfortunate that you didn’t know this fine man personally, you more than likely knew him by sight. Jim was a walker. From Arkport to Canisteo, you might have seen Jim walking. He was unmistakable in his Australian-style brown leather cowboy hat. He would maybe be carrying a 2X4 for an ongoing project at his lifelong him on Franklin St. or just on his way to his favorite spot; Billy Shu’s to bring some of his favorite ladies, Peg and Lori, some morning gifts to make them smile. Maybe you sat next to him at the counter there and received some of his wit and humor, and if you did, your day was a brighter one. Jim also had special friends at the Hornell VFEW where he was a member. His special friend at the VFW, Gail had many a day brightened by Jim’s midday gifts of candle and humor. He was also a member of the Canisteo American Legion. Semper Fi to this Marine who proudly served his country from 1966-1968 where battlefield injuries shortened his military career. Though Jim never told you, he indeed was awarded the Purple Heart medal, the National Defense Serve Medal, the Vietnam Medal with one star, the Vietnam Campaign medal with divise and the Rifle Sharpshooter Badge. Jim was predeceased by his parents and one brother, Merle Richard. He is survived by his sister, Barbara Smith and a niece and nephew. All are welcome for Jim’s graveside service at the Bath VA Cemetery at 1pm on March 6, 2014. The world needs many more James Allen Shutt’s. You are and will be missed our friend.
