William G. Stone, Sr.

William  G.  “Bill” Stone Sr., a resident of the Veterans’ Administration Facility in Bath, NY, went home to be with the Lord on April 3, 2014.  Mr. Stone was born on March 7, 1920, in Elmira, NY, to Sydney Stone and Louise Stone Sechrist.  He was twice married, first to Dorothy Dodge Stone and secondly to Carmella (Betty) Ladonne Stone.

Bill graduated from Elmira Southside High School with the class of 1939.  William was selected to be a member of the Chemung County Sports Hall of Fame for his participation and excellence in the sports of wrestling and boxing.

 He enlisted in the U.S. Army prior to World War II.  He was deployed with the 9th Infantry Division during World War II, where he served as a staff sergeant, and saw action in the European, African, and Middle Eastern Campaigns.   He received medals including medals for Good Conduct and a Bronze Star for heroic and meritorious achievement.

William worked at the former Remington Rand, and he retired from the United States Postal Service, where he worked as Assistant Superintendent of Mails, overseeing the Elmira Postal Sectional Center.

Following retirement from the USPS, Bill volunteered with the American Red Cross of Steuben County and was a Patient Advocate Representative at Corning Hospital.  He belonged to the American Legion, Veterans’ of Foreign Wars, and the Lions Club.

Left to cherish Mr. Stone’s memory are sons: William, Jr. (Brenda) Stone of Montgomery, TX;  Gregory (Sue) Stone of Summerfield, FL; Randall Stone of Auburndale, FL, Lawrence Stone of Strasburg, VA., and step-son, Jerry Bower of Reno, NV; daughters: Danielle (Doug) Woodward of Horseheads,  and Tamara (Jerry) Lipscomb of Montrose, WV., and daughters-in-law Carol Stone of Odessa, NY and Eura Kang Stone of Albany; grandchildren:  Stephanie Woodward, William Stone 3rd (Audrey) , Chad Woodward (Jessica), Ryan (Sarah) Woodward, Grant Woodward, Lauren Stone, Joshua Lipscomb, Elijah Lipscomb, Preston Lipscomb, Kristen (Dave) Heichel, Katie (Kyle) Holtz , Kelly Stone, Mary Stone, and seventeen great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

Preceding him in death were his parents, Sydney and Louise; his step-father Ronald Sechrist, wives Dorothy and Carmella, Carol June Bodine, Ronald (Duke) Sechrist, Darrell Sechrist, Ronda Hall, and granddaughter Aleena Lipscomb.

A Memorial Service is planned to be held Monday, April 7, 2014, at the Pennsylvania Avenue Methodist Church at 3 p.m. in Pine City, NY.  The Reverend Bill Vallet officiating the service and military honors will be conveyed.
Funeral arrangements are in care of the Dagon Funeral Home, 38 Church St., Hornell, NY
