Ruthie D. Newell Hornell Ruthie D. Newell, 62, of 1497 Sharps Hills Road, passed away Saturday (October 18, 2014) at Strong Memorial Hospital. Born in Hornell, February 17, 1952, the daughter of Ernest E. and Onnolee (Sanford) Dungan Jr., she was lifelong area resident, graduating from Arkport Central School, then from Alfred State College in 1972 with an Associate’s Degree, and later from Alfred University with a Bachelor’s Degree. She retired from Alfred State College as an Administrative Assistant in 2007 after 35 years. She was a member of the Arkport United Methodist Church, where she was very active and served on many different committees. Ruthie received the Joslin Victory Award for living with diabetes for over 50 years, from the Harvard Medical School, and recently became an Honor Flight Guardian for World War II veterans. She enjoyed baking, shopping, visiting NYC, the beach, knitting, was an avid Yankees fan, enjoyed Syracuse basketball, and was very patriotic. Ruthie will be most remembered for the love of her family, and also her generosity to many others. She was predeceased by her parents. She is survived by her husband Thomas E. Newell, whom she married on August 4, 1973, her daughter Jessica Ruth Newell of Rochester, her granddaughter Macy Jean Mitchell, her sisters Lucinda (James) Loomis of Rushville, Mary (William) Calnan of Baldwinsville, her brother Kevin, (Bonnie) Dungan of Arkport, a sister- in- law Nancy & James Ells of Campbell, several nieces, nephews and cousins, and many friends. The family will be present 4-8PM Tuesday, October 21, 2014, at the Bender – Brown & Powers Funeral Home, 354 Canisteo St, Hornell. A Funeral service will be held at the Arkport United Methodist Church on Wednesday at 11:00 AM, Rev. Pam Carey officiating. Burial will be in Arkport Cemetery, Arkport.
