Robert E. Batte Stephens Mills Robert E. Batte 81, of 8130 State Route 21, Arkport (Stephens Mills) passed away peacefully in his sleep Wednesday morning (January 21, 2015). Born on December 22, 1933, in Canandaigua, NY, the son of the late Earl H. and Helen Simonson Batte, he had resided in Holcomb during his early life, and attended East Bloomfield Central School. He enlisted in the Marine Corps and served his country from Nov. 1953 until Nov. 1956. In the fall of 2013, with the assistance of Phil Palmesano of Corning and Glen Niles of Arkport Central School, he was awarded his high school diploma through the Operation Recognation Program. In 1957, he moved to Arkport where he was employed by the Murphy Freight Division of McBride Trucking. In 1963, he became employed by Shay’s Service in Dansville and worked there for many years, retiring from Triple A Trucking in February 1990 Bob was a member of Our Lady of The Valley Parish, and a communicant of St. Ann’s Church in Hornell. His hobbies included restoring old Ford tractors and backhoes and remodeling houses with his son. He especially enjoyed having coffee with his friends at McDonalds. He was a member of the Teamster’s Union, Local #118, a life member and past president of the Fremont Fire Department, former member of the Hornell Motorcycle Club, a life member of the DAV, and a former councilman on the Fremont Town Board In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by an uncle, Jerry Simonson of Bath, and an aunt Elthea Meeker of Dansville, a brother, William in 1961, a nephew, Eddie Batte of Canadice and 2 great nephews of California. He is survived by his wife, the former Agnes May Maginley, to whom he was married August 16, 1958, his daughter, Roween Elizabeth Panning of Holland, Michigan, his son, Dr. Ryan T. Batte of Stephens Mills, five sisters, Elthea “Babe” (Paul) Spiegel , Ann (the late John) Vandusen , Mary Ellen “Sue” (Paul) Luckman , Edith (Robert) Douglas and Nancy Patz, two brothers, Thomas (Jean) Batte and Jerry (Jean) Batte , a sister-in-law, Jean Batte , three grandchildren, Luke David(Katherine) Panning of Ann Arbor, Michigan, Eve Elizabeth Panning and Josiah Robert Panning both of Holland , Michigan, many nieces and nephews and a special nephew, Rodney Batte. There were no calling hours. A private funeral service was held at the Bender-Brown & Powers Funeral Home, 354 Canisteo Street in Hornell with Deacon Robert McCormick and Rev. James Pearce officiating. Burial followed in Fremont Cemetery, Stephens Mills.
