Timothy P. Mahany

Timothy P. “Tim” Mahany – 60 – of New Jersey, formerly of Arkport, died unexpectedly early Thursday morning (May 8, 2014) at his home.

Born in Hornell on September 27, 1953, he was the son of Patrick & Phyllis (Milliard) Mahany.

Tim grew up in Arkport and was a graduate of Arkport Central School (class of 1972).  Following high school, he began working in the family potato farm (Patrick E. Mahany & Sons Inc) and was involved in the day-to-day operation of the business. 

After working on the family farm for a few years, Tim enlisted in the US Army and served his country for 4 years.  While in the Army, he was stationed in Germany for about a year.  Following his discharge from the military, Tim returned to Arkport and for several years continued working with his father & family on the potato farm. 

For the past 35 years, Tim was employed primarily as a truck driver and resided in several locations, including Colorado, Maine, Florida and New York.  For the past 14 years, Tim has lived in New Jersey and served as a Transport Driver for Delta Automotive Service as a car carrier.

Tim was a former member of Our Lady of the Valley Parish and a communicant of St. Ann’s Church.  He was member of the Arkport American Legion.  Tim was an avid Ford Mustang Enthusiast and extremely proud of his 2007 Ford Mustang Convertible.  He also had a love of music, especially rock & roll and classical music and was a fan of Andrea Bocelli.  One of Tim’s favorite pastimes was simply enjoying a beer, gazing at the stars and sitting around a campfire with family & friends.

He was preceded in death by his son, Anthony “Tony” Mahany who died in 1999 and also his mother, Phyllis Mahany who died in 2002.

Surviving are Violeta Iannuzzi with whom he resided; his daughters, Nicole (Mark) Berry of Syracuse and Danielle (Ryan) Bartorillo of Syracuse; his father, Patrick E. Mahany of Arkport; 3 brothers, Patrick (Karen) Mahany, JR of Silverthorne, CO, Sean (Nancy) Mahany of Scottsdale, AZ and Kevin (Christine) Mahany of Arkport; his sister, Michelle (Alan) Eddison of Stuart FL; 5 grandchildren; several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews & cousins.

The family of Timothy P. “Tim” Mahany will receive friends on Monday from 4:00 PM – 7:00 PM at the Dagon Funeral Home, 38 Church St., Hornell, NY.  A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday at
10:00 AM at St. Ann’s Church with Father John Cullen officiating.  Burial will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery.

Tim’s family request that memorial contributions in his name be made to the Arkport American Legion, West Ave., Arkport, NY 14807.  Memorial forms will be available at the Dagon Funeral Home.

In honor of Tim’s service to his country, the American Flag at the Dagon Funeral Home will be flown at half-staff.

Levi Peterson

Levi Peterson, newborn son of Tom & Katie Peterson of 27 Morningside Dr., Painted Post, formerly of Almond, was taken by the Angels to live life eternal in Heaven on the day of his birth (May 8, 2014).

Although his time on earth was brief, Levi was truly a gift from God and was loved by his entire family.

In addition to his parents, Tom & Katie, survivors include his maternal grandparents, John & Cindy Flint of Almond; paternal grandmother, Dr. Rhonda Peterson of Almond; maternal great-grandmother, Joanne Flint of Canisteo; his aunts & uncles, Chad Giglio of Hornell, Kristi & Brian Marlatt of Almond and Shelley Flint of Almond; several cousins; great aunts & great uncles.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday at 4:00 PM at the Dagon Funeral Home, 38 Church St., Hornell, NY with Deacon Robert McCormick officiating.  Private committal services will be in Woodlawn Cemetery, Almond, NY.

Veronica Dionne Hornell Veronica Dionne, 63, formerly of County Route 29, passed away Saturday (May 10, 2014), at the Hornell Gardens. Born in Kansas City, MO, July 2, 1950, the daughter of Joseph and Blanch Young Dionne, she had resided several years in the Buffalo area and was employed as a health care aide. She was predeceased by her parents. She is survived by a longtime friend Kenneth Cope of Buffalo as well as several other relatives in the Buffalo area. Mark Herbert Zuschin

Mark Herbert Zuschin passed away on December 10, 2013 at his home in Rochester, NY. 

He was in New Rochelle, NY on April 11, 1960 and was the son of Herbert Louis & Anne (Farnan) Zuschin.

Mark is survived by his parents, Herbert & Anne Zuschin of Arkport; his sisters, Kathryn Zuschin of San Francisco, CA and Mary Anne (Paul) Tytka of Buffalo, NY; his brother, Paul (Dana) Zuschin of San Diego, CA; 2 nephews, Matthew & Sean Tytka of Buffalo.

A Memorial Mass will be celebrated on Saturday at 11:00 AM at St. Brendan’s Church in Almond with Fr. Sean DiMaria officiating.  Burial will be in the family plot at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Rexville at a later date.

Kathryn E. Beaver Hornell Kathryn E. Beaver, 82, of 68 Steuben St, passed away Tuesday (May 13, 2014), at the Hornell Gardens. Born in Binghamton, September 15, 1931, the daughter of Harold and Beatrice (Odea) Castle, she had resided in Hornell for the majority of her life. Kathryn attended the New Hope Wesleyan Church in Hornell. She was predeceased by her parents, one brother Thomas Castle and one sister Ann Brown. She is survived by her husband John “Jack” Beaver Jr. whom she married in 1961, one son Michael (Judy) Crook of Canisteo, one daughter Patty Ann Crook of Hornell, one brother William (Barbara) Castle of Belmont and one sister-in-law Nanette Castle of Rochester, 7 Grandchildren, 17 Great Grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Born in Hornell, December 1, 1935, the daughter of Thurlow and Doris Schwarz Holden, she was a graduate of the Arkport Central School class of 1953. After graduation she moved to Rochester where she spent most of her life, returning to Arkport 8 years ago. She was predeceased by her parents. Alfred L. Chapman “Al” Hornell Alfred L. Chapman, 89, a resident of the Bath VAMC formerly of Cleveland Avenue passed away peacefully Friday (May 16, 2014) at Bath VAMC. Born in Hornell, May 12, 1925, the son of Roblee and Fern Chapman, he was a lifelong area resident. He was a member of Our Lady of the Valley Parish, and a communicant of St. Ann’s Church. He had served twice in the US Navy once during World War II from 1942-1945, and a second time during the Korean Conflict from 1949-1954. Al had previously worked as a police officer for the City of Hornell, and later was the owner and operator of Chapman’s Center in North Hornell for many years. He enjoyed woodworking, leather crafting, and cross stitching. Al was also a member of the Hornell K of C and was also a founding father of the Finger Lakes Chapter of the K of C. He was predeceased by his parents, as well as his wife Lucy DeSanto Chapman in 2001, whom he married on September 10, 1949, he was also predeceased by his sister Ramona Brody. He is survived by his son Robert (Pamela) Chapman of Hornell, 2 sisters Decla Phelps of CA, and June of Fla, 6 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren. The family will be present on Tuesday, May 20, 2014,from 2-4 & 7-9pm at the Bender – Brown & Powers Funeral Home, 354 Canisteo St, Hornell. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St Ann’s Church on Wednesday at 11:00 AM. Burial will be at St Mary’s Cemetery, Fremont, with military honors. William B. Johnson

William Burnell “Wallboard” Johnson – 92 – of 48 Scott St., Hornell, passed away ­­­on Tuesday (May 20, 2014) at Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester, following a brief illness. 

Born in Bradford, Pennsylvania on March 22, 1922, he was a son of Hugh F. and Florence (Disney) Johnson. 

Bill grew up in Hornell and was a graduate of St. Ann’s School and later graduated from Hornell High School (class of 1941).  He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U. S. Coast Guard from 1942 – 1945 in the Asia-Pacific Theater of War. He was employed for 42 years at the Erie Railroad, Union Pacific Railroad, the Erie Lackawanna Railroad, retiring as an engineer from the Delaware and Hudson Railroad in 1983.  

He was married on December 7, 1946  at St. Ignatius Loyola Church to the former Doris McKee who died on January 27, 1989.  Together they owned and operated Terry’s Tavern in Hornell for 13 years. 

Bill was one of the original parishioners of St. Ignatius Loyola Church. He was a former member of the Knights of Columbus, the Arthur Cunningham Post of the American Legion, the J. J. Mooney Post of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the Hornell Association and a 48 year member of the Hornell Elks Lodge # 364. 

Bill had a deep love for his family, and took great joy in all family events and activities. He loved watching his sons and later his grandchildren participate in sports, musical and dance events. He was an avid golfer and a charter member of Twin Hickory Golf Club.  

Wallboard also had a deep love for the Hornell Community and a great passion for the history of Hornell.  He was one of the oldest & most devoted fan of the Hornell Red Raiders and an avid Kentucky Basketball and Notre Dame Football fan. 

He dearly loved his longhaired miniature dachshund Norman, who accompanied him everywhere.  He later adopted his ginger cat, Sassy Boy. 

In addition to his wife, Doris, Bill was predeceased by ten siblings, Elizabeth Newman, Frances “Saunce” Johnson, Robert Johnson, Fred Johnson, Almeda Perkins, Stella Smith, Eileen Johnson, Leo Johnson, Florence Egger, and Ronald Johnson; his former daughter-in-law, Susan J. Johnson. 

He is survived by his sons William B. (Gail) Johnson Jr.; Greggery H. (Elizabeth) Johnson; and Jeffery H. (Carla) Johnson, all of Hornell; his dear fiancée of 22 years, Arlene Huff Dennis of Hornell; seven grandchildren, Vanessa (Daniel) Spitulnik, Jaime (Scott) Milanovich, Keegan (Timothy) Manchester, Matthew (Amanda) Johnson, Erica (Joseph) Saliceti, Kyle (Brittney) Johnson, and Kurt Johnson; eleven great-grandchildren, Myer, Vivianne, and JaneEllen Spitulnik; Anna and Katherine Manchester; Macall and Maggie Milanovich; Will, Luke, and Madelynn Johnson and Vincent Saliceti, and many nieces and nephews of the Johnson and McKee Families. 

The family of William B. “Wallboard” Johnson will receive friends on Thursday from 3:00 PM – 7:00 PM at the Dagon Funeral Home, 38 Church St., Hornell, NY.  A Funeral Service will be held on Friday at 10:00 AM at St. Ann’s Church with Deacon Robert McCormick officiating.  Burial will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery. 

Bill’s family request that memorial contributions in his name be made to either the Hornell YMCA, Music & Arts Center, 18 Center St., Hornell, NY 14843 or to the Hornell Humane Society, 7649 Industrial Park Road, Hornell, NY 14843.  Memorial forms will be available at the Dagon Funeral Home.

Lucy M. Solo

Lucy M. Solo – (85) – of 106 Elizabeth St., Hornell, died Tuesday morning (May 20, 2014) at McAuley Manor following a brief illness.

A native & life resident of Hornell, she was born May 1, 1929, and was the daughter of Frank & Mary (Falco) Miller.

Lucy was a graduate of St. Ann’s School and later graduated from Hornell High School (Class of 1949).  Following high school she earned her beautician’s license from Continental School of Cosmetology in Buffalo.  In 1950 Lucy began working as a beautician at Pat Rapp Beauty Salon and within one year purchased the business, re-naming it LuAnn’s Beauty Shop.   She owned & operated the business for the next 51 years.

She was a member of Our Lady of the Valley Parish and a communicant of St. Ann’s Church.  She was also a member of AZB Sorority.

Lucy was preceded in death by 3 brothers, Joseph Miller, Anthony “Tony” Miller and Neil “Ed” Miller; 3 sisters, Rose Schiavi, Ann Miller and Janet “Jennie” Grassi.

She was married on July 21, 1951 to Francis “Joe” Solo who survives.  Also surviving are 1 daughter, Judy (Steve) Lamb of Hornell; 2 sons, Fran Solo of Endicott, NY and Christopher Solo of Endicott, NY; 4 grandchildren, Amy (Phil) Quattrini, Matthew Lamb, Erik (Samantha) Solo and Emily Solo; 2 great-grandchildren, Logan Quattrini & Makenzi Quattrini; 1 great-grandson “on the way”; along with several nieces & nephews.

Leo A. Hillman

Leo A. Hillman – 86 – of 50 East Main St., Hornell, died early Saturday morning (May 24, 2014) at his home, following a long illness.

A native & life resident of Hornell, he was born September 9, 1927 and was the son of Robert & Rose (McCarthy) Hillman.

Leo attended Hornell High School and later served his country as a member of the US Navy.  He was employed for 37 years as a service repair technician for Sears in Hornell, retiring in 1989. 

He was a member of Our Lady of the Valley Parish and a communicant of St. Ann’s Church.  Leo enjoyed hunting & fishing and, as a dedicated sports fan, also enjoyed watching football and baseball — especially the New York Mets.

Leo was preceded in death by 2 sons, Michael who died January 24, 1988 and Thomas who died April 7, 1994; and also his brother, John Hillman who died September 18, 2008.

He was married on February 24, 1951 (63 years) to the former Isabelle Perrin who survives.  Also surviving are his daughter, Roseanne Hunt of Hornell; 2 sons, Steven (Sandy) Hillman of Mt. Shasta, CA and Joseph (Karen) Hillman of Plantation, FL; 1 brother, Robert (Eleanor) Hillman of Hornell; 1 sister, Rosemary Walton of Ashville, NC; 9 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; several nieces & nephews.

Jean F. Campbell – (87) – a resident of Updyke’s Willow Ridge Quality Care Facility, formerly of Green Acres Trailer Court, was welcomed into Heaven by her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on Monday, May 26, 2014.

A native & life resident of Hornell, she was born June 7, 1926, the daughter of Ambrose & Helen (Bennett) Smith.

Jean was a graduate of Hornell High School (class of 1944).  For over 20 years she worked in many capacities at the former Spencer Print Shop in Hornell.  She later was employed in the Customer Service Department at New York State Electric & Gas (NYSEG), retiring in 1992.

She was preceded in death by her daughter, Linda J. Mullen; her son, Robert L. Campbell; and her brother, Thomas A. Smith.

Surviving are her son, Thomas (Billie) Campbell of Panama City, FL; her daughter-in-law, Kim Campbell of Navarre, FL; 4 granddaughters, Kelly (Robert) Gable, Crystal (Caleb) Phillips, Jennifer (Scott) Palladino and Lisa (Mark) Porzio; 7 great-grandchildren, Georgia Rose Phillips, Caleb Phillips Jr, Elizabeth Gable, Laurel Gable, Emily Palladino, Domenic Palladino and Cameron Porzio; her longtime loving companion, Kenneth Swift of Dansville; many nieces & nephews.

At Jean’s request there will be no calling hours.  A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday at 1:00 PM at the Dagon Funeral Home, 38 Church St., Hornell, NY with Deacon Robert McCormick officiating.

Richard S. “Bud” VanDuser Almond Richard S “Bud”. VanDuser, 79, of 30 Main Street, passed away suddenly Sunday (June 1, 2014) at St James Mercy Hospital. Born in North Hornell, July 24, 1934, the son of Howard and Bernice (Townsend) VanDuser, he was a lifelong area resident. Bud was retired from Buffalo Crushed Stone in Alfred, holding many positions including mechanic, welder, and supervisor. He was a member of the Almond Fire and Ambulance, and a former member of the Hornell Eagles, and Hornell Moose Lodge. Bud enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping, and being outdoors. He was predeceased by his parents, his wife Jeanine Watson VanDuser whom he married August 31, 1957 and was predeceased by her in 1991. He is also predeceased by his sister Alberta Lewis, and his brother Paul Binder. He is survived by 3 daughters Monica (Dale) Montgomery of NC, Debbie (Eric) Smith of VA, Teeka (Michael) Sherman of West Almond, 2 sons Terry (Sherry) VanDuser of Hornell, Richard VanDuser of Hornell, his dear close friend and caretaker Rose Acor of Almond, 2 sisters Nancy Griffin of Almond, Doris Mullen of Almond, 2 brothers Donald (Bonnie) VanDuser of FLA, Kenneth VanDuser of Almond, 22 grandchildren and numberous great grandchildren, as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins. Gerald A. Torrence Almond Gerald A. Torrence, 80, of McHenry Valley Rd., passed away Sunday (June 1, 2014) Jones Memorial Hospital in Wellsville. Born in Hornell, January 18, 1934, the son of Fay and Illa Allen Torrence, he had resided in Almond since 1960. During Gerald’s formative years he lived on Keuka Lake helping his family run a boat livery service. He was one of the first patients in the area to undergo open heart surgery in 1963. Gerald was a partner and helped operate the Torrence & Son Hardware in Almond until its closing in 1964 and also began his 30 year career as the Maintenance Supervisor for the College of Ceramics at Alfred University. One of his favorite hobbies was to collect and restore outboard motors. In addition to his parents Gerald was predeceased by one brother, Richard Torrence. He is survived by his wife Lorraine Williams Torrence to whom he was married for 54 years, one son, Bruce (Laurie) Torrence of Greece, one daughter, Brenda (Martin) Naumilket of Medina OH, one brother, Darwin (Barbara) Torrence of Fremont, six grandchildren, Jesse, Jacob, Natalie, Ella, Ava, and Alexander, nieces and nephews. Cynthia L. (Cindy) Polanowski Angelica Cynthia L.(Cindy) Polanowski, 53, of 65 East Main Street, passed away Tuesday (June 10, 2014) at St James Mercy Hospital in Hornell as a result of injuries sustained in an auto-pedestrian accident in Angelica. Born in North Hornell, September 2, 1960, the daughter of William and Louise Strait Spicer, she was a graduate of Hornell High School, Class of 1978. Cindy received her LPN degree from BOCES, and her RN Degree from Alfred State College. She had been employed as a registered nurse in the emergency department at St. James Mercy Hospital Hospital and at the time of her death was Senior Vice President of Clinical and Program Services for the Allegany ARC, where she had been employed since 1995. Cindy was a member of Chapter 620, Hornell Moose Lodge and had recently received the title College of Regents. In her spare time she enjoyed playing cards, golf, bowling, but will be best remembered for her love for her family, She was predeceased by her mother, Louise Spicer. She is survived by her husband, Eddie Polanowski of Angelica, her father, William Spicer of Hornell, 3 daughters, Megan (Cody) White of Angelica, Brenna (Joshawane Ivey) Polanowski of Georgia, Nikki (Logan Ost) Polanowski of Hornell, 2 brothers, Bradley (Patti) Spicer of Hornell and Steven (Victoria) Spicer of Illinois, her mother-in-law, Norma Polanowski of Belfast, grandchildren, Saige Olivia White, Joshawane Ivey, Jazmyne Ost, several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins. Anne Braun Wenslow of Alfred died June 10, 2014, following a valiant struggle against complications from a fall. She was surrounded by her family at the time of her passing.

Born in Rochester, NY, on July 16, 1931, she was the daughter of Leo Braun Sr. and Anna Dummer Braun.  Her parents and an infant daughter, Susan, predeceased her.
 
Anne earned her BS degree at Nazareth College, Rochester (NY) and MS degree at the University of Pittsburgh (PA).  A gifted teacher, she served at the high school level in Troupsburg, Jasper, Fillmore, Friendship, Alfred-Almond and Wellsville Central Schools.  In 1969 she joined Alfred State College as professor of office administration and technology.  During her years there, she held campus positions as department chair, curriculum coordinator, president of the Faculty Senate, chair of various college-wide committees, as well as commencement and convocation speaker roles, until her retirement in 1995. 

Throughout her career, Anne was a member of several professional organizations.  After retirement, she continued as consultant and evaluator of office education programs for the NJ State Higher Education Department and the Commission of Higher Education/Middle States Association of Secondary Schools and Colleges. 

Anne was a loving and proud mother and grandmother, an accomplished seamstress, quilter and needleworker, avid gardener, enthusiastic cook, and golfer. She loved to travel and had a lifelong affection for lighthouses. A strong and independent woman who lived life on her own terms, she was intensely loyal and always ready to help her family, friends, and community.

Anne served as a 4-H club leader and Boy Scout badge counselor, notary public, tutor and board member for the Literacy Volunteers of America – Allegany County, board member, secretary and chair of the supervisory committee for the Alfred-Allegany Educational Employees Federal Credit, member and chair of the Alfred Village Planning Board, and board member/treasurer of the Alfred 21st Century Group.

Although Anne was 82, everyone told her that she looked years younger. Her secret, as she frequently told younger women, was to “always moisturize!”

She is survived by son, Michael (Jennifer Evans) of North Hollywood, CA; daughters Cynthia (Stuart Yaniger) of Grayslake, IL, and Amy (Jeff Fretz) of Pasadena, CA; sister Leanne Keel of Waterloo, NY; brother Leo (Sue) of Rochester, NY; many grandchildren, nieces and nephews. 

At Anne’s request there will be no calling hours.  A memorial Mass will be held on Monday, June 30th, 2014 at 2:00 PM at St. Brendan’s Church, Almond, where Anne was a communicant, lector and former parish council member.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to SS Brendan & Jude’s Parish, Alfred Ambulance Fund, The Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation of America, American Heart Association or the American Diabetes Association.

Mavis O. Hija Wellsville Mavis O. Hija, 86, a resident of Highland Healtcare Center in Wellsville, a former resident of Angelica, passed away peacefully Thursday (June 12, 2014). Born in Friendship, June 12, 1928, the daughter of DeForest and Martha (Scott) Crandall, she was a lifelong area resident, returning from Michigan in 1961.She was a member of the Angelica United Methodist Church. Mavis enjoyed knitting, crocheting, painting, reading, Ice Hockey, and the New York Yankees. She was predeceased by her husband Joseph Hija in 1967, her daughter Alice Hija Horton in 1968, as well as her 3 brothers Harold, Robert, and Clayton Crandall, and 2 sisters Elizabeth Crandall Bentley, and Mary Decker. She is survived by her daughter Linda (Jerry) Phelps of Tioga, PA, 2 sons Thomas Hija of Osceola, PA, and Raymond Hija of Campbell, 2 grandchildren of which she raised Donita Cryer of LA, and Stephen Horton of NC, her sister Laura (Walter) Fuhrer of Elkland, PA, her sister in law Delores Crandall of Angelica, 11 grandchildren, several great grandchildren, and several great great grandchildren, several nieces and nephews. The family will be present Monday, June 16, 2014, at the Brown & Powers Funeral Home, 101 West Avenue Angelica, from 12-1pm, where funeral services will be at 1:00 PM, with the Rev. Stephen M. “Steve” Cameron – 61 – of Brooklyn, NY, formerly of Hornell, died Friday, April 25, 2014 at Calvary Hospital, following a long illness.

Born in Hornell on May 7, 1952, he was the son of Dr. Robert & Betty (Roth) Cameron.

Steve grew up in Hornell and was a graduate of St. Ann’s School.  He later graduated from Hornell High School (class of 1971).  Following high school, Steve attended Herron School of Art and Design in Indianapolis, IN (affiliated with Purdue University). 

Throughout the years, Steve resided in several locations, including Atlanta, GA, Fort. Lauderdale, FL and has resided in NYC for the past nine years.  He was an accomplished artist and won numerous awards for his works.  He was employed by “Fantastic Creations” as a designer / artist and traveled nationally and internationally working with numerous companies throughout the world. 

Steve had a lifelong affection for horses.  He was an accomplished equestrian rider and in his younger years enjoyed competitive equestrian riding and also participating in traditional fox hunts.  Over the years, Steve owned several horses — most recently his beloved “Star”.

Surviving are 3 brothers, Francis “F.C.” Cameron of Chambersburg, PA, Bruce “Doc” Cameron of Chambersburg, PA and Casey (Debbie) Cameron of Hornell; several nieces & nephews.

Donald E. Fuller Hornell Donald E. Fuller, 80, of Reservoir Rd., passed away Friday (June 20, 2014) at his daughter’s home following a lengthy illness. Born in Shinglehouse, PA, August 25, 1933, the son of Burrell and Florence Chapman Fuller, he had resided in Hornell the majority of his life. Donald served his country in the United States Air Force from 1952-1956, serving in the Korean Conflict. He owned and operated Donald Fuller & Son Contracting in Hornell and was also a truck driver for many years. Donald was a member of the Hillside Baptist Church and enjoyed driving stock car. Donald and his wife Florence had been foster parents for over 25 years, caring for over 67 children. The Fuller’s were the emergency placement home for Steuben County, taking responsibility for many children in emergency situations. In addition to his parents he was predeceased by his wife Florence on April 4, 2014 and one son Donald B. Fuller. He is survived by three daughters, Bonnie (Darryl) Barth of North Carolina, Joy (Mitch) Weaver of Hornell and Robin (Chris) Fuller-Jones of North Carolina, three sons, Randy (Patti) Fuller of North Carolina, Brion Fuller of Hornell and Daniel (Tina) Fuller of Pennsylvania, many grandchildren, and 3 great grandchildren, brothers, Carl Fuller of Stannards and Robert (Buena) Fuller of Wellsville. Carlyle E. “Carl” Mills Jr. Jasper Carlyle E. “Carl” Mills Jr., 63, of 2469 Hunter Hill Road, passed away Saturday (June 21, 2014) at his home. Born in Wellsville, January 18, 1951, the son of Carlyle E. Mills Sr. and Anna (Guild) Mills he had resided most of his life in the Hornell-Canisteo area and in Jasper since 1987. Carl had served his country as a member of the United States Navy during the Vietnam Era serving aboard the USS Shangri-La and the USS Laffey. He retired in March 2014, after over 30 years of service with Phillips Lighting in Bath. One of Carl’s favorite hobbies was his participation in the Japanese Martial Arts, “Hakko-Ryu Ju-Jutsu”. He had been awarded the 2nd degree black belt status, and had received the rank of Sensai. He had also been an instructor in martial arts in the area for several years. Carl loved horses and was a member of the Morgan Horse Association. He was a member of the Board of Directors of the Woodlawn Cemetery Association in Canisteo and served as superintendent of grounds at the cemetery for several years. He will be fondly remembered for the excellent care he gave to the cemetery during those years. He was predeceased by his parents. He is survived by his wife, Michelle Nye Mills of Jasper, his daughters, Angela (Gregory) Greene of Hampton Virginia, Heather Mills of Canisteo and Andrea Mills of Jasper, his sons, Cory (Jennifer) Mills stationed with the US Navy at the Norfolk Naval Station in Virginia Beach, and Jacob (Holly) Borden, stationed with the US Army at Ft. Drum in Watertown, his brother, Justin Mills of Horseheads and his sisters, Lois (Steven) Olix of Hornell, Cathy (Sy) Thomas of North Carolina, Sue Diaber of Ohio and Jessica Mills of Mt. Morris, 13 grandchildren, Chandler Greene, Christopher Greene, Kady Mills-Lewis, Kristian Rice, Kameron Mills, Jacob George, Kendra Fullmer, Brandon Mills, Leila Mills, Kailynn Mills, Pheobe Borden, Keira Borden and Destiny Campbell as well as several nieces and nephews. Sarah Manning “Sally” Dean of 322 Grand St., Hornell, died early Saturday morning (June 28, 2014) at her home, following a long illness.

Born in Hornell, she was the daughter of John & Mary (Loree) Manning.

Sally was married to Donald P. Dean who died in 1964 and later married Peter J. Bey who died in 2005.  She was also preceded in death by her brother, John D. Manning; her step-children, John Bey and Steven Bey.

Surviving are 6 daughters, Rosemary (Gary) Hajnos of Grand Island, NY, Teresa (Ben) Taylorson of Fallston, MD, Patricia Stiles of Hornell, Kathryn (Mark) Morrissey of Hornell, Monica Feenaughty of Hornell and Donna (Kevin) Dean-Hemler of Canisteo; 3 sons, David (Carrie) Dean of Sarasota, FL, Phillip Dean of St. Petersburg, FL and Paul (Becky) Dean of Canisteo, NY; her sister, Mary Teresa Guidarelli of Rochester; her sister-in-law, Olga Brutsman of Andover; 1 stepson, James (Melanie) Bey; many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces & nephews.
