BRUCE ROBERT GREENE Bruce Greene of Alfred Station, NY was born to Kenneth and Thedora Greene of Perry, NY on September 5, 1939. He died on July 5, 2014 in Wellsville, NY from the effects of an aggressive brain tumor diagnosed a few months earlier. Bruce is survived by his wife, Susan and his sole sibling, Charles W Greene of Clarence Center, NY. Well-known for over forty years as the potter-proprietor of Hillbottom Pottery on Main Street in Alfred Station, he is also fondly remembered as the junior and senior high school art instructor at Alfred-Almond Central School from 1971-1995. Upon graduation from Buffalo State College in 1961, Bruce taught elementary art in Corning, NY. In 1964 he received his MA in Art Education from the University of Illinois. For the next four years Bruce was an elementary art instructor in Oak Park, IL, a Chicago suburb. His last student teacher there, Susan Wiese of Oak Park, walked into his life forever. They married later that year and moved to Alfred where Bruce received his MFA in Ceramic Design at the NYS College of Ceramics at Alfred University in 1971. Bruce took the position at Alfred-Almond, and was joined a year later by his wife who became the elementary art instructor. Along the way Bruce made pottery sold through Hillbottom Enterprises, which included also a modest antiques business and Susan’s short-lived hand weaving business. Upon his retirement from teaching in 1995, potting became his full time occupation. His work was available from select local and regional shops including his own. Hillbottom Pottery also reached the market through craft venues like the Clothesline, Allentown, and Waterfront shows. From its second year, Bruce was a member of Allegany Artisans, a guild of local craftspersons who sold directly from their studios in an annual “tour” event. After Bruce retired he also taught a summer Elderhostel art class at Alfred University. Later he and a fellow alum campaigned to preserve as much as possible of the original architecture of the historic Steinheim Museum there, during its transformation into the Career Development Center. He helped catalog the Paul Vickers Gardner glass collection. The Baker’s Bridge Historical Association has benefited from his support since its inception in 1976. He enthusiastically contributed to the scholarships awarded annually by the Alfred-Almond Fine Arts Boosters to college-bound arts students. The Greenes had no children but were keen partners in collecting American antiques to furnish their home. That interest branched out into household textiles and most notably, into the specialty of period clothing from about 1780-1880. The costume collection merged their interests in material and cultural history, and became so large that it ultimately went to the Genesee Country Museum & Village at Mumford, NY where it is presented as a major primary research resource. A quiet, peaceable, honest and generous man—always energetically busy—Bruce’s influence is enjoyed around the world as someone lifts one of his mugs, pushes flower stalks into an arranger, or switches on a lamp one more time. As professionals, artisans and dabblers, former students have passed on treasured skills and insights they acquired in his classroom. Visitors to the museum marvel at a slice of history made possible by Bruce’s eager participation in Susan’s later-life focus. Many of us, especially his wife, know we would not have been all we are without his inspiration, encouragement and support. A memorial service will be held on Monday, July 14 at 11:00 AM at the Alfred Station Seventh Day Baptist Church in Alfred Station, followed with a buffet lunch and an open house at Hillbottom Pottery until 1:30 at which Bruce’s remaining stock will be offered for sale—all proceeds to go to the Hart Comfort House of Wellsville NY. In lieu of flowers please make any contributions to the Hart Comfort House or the Bakers’ Bridge Historical Association of Alfred Station, NY.

Maurice Hannon

Maurice J. Hannon Maurice J. Hannon, 75, of Angelica NY, passed away at Olean General Hospital on Friday, July 18, 2014 as a result of complications from pneumonia. He was born in Glenwood NY., the son of John and Loretta (Rogers) Hannon. He married the former Elizabeth (Betty) Murphy in Springville NY in 1965. After attending St. Aloysius grade school and Griffith Institute and Central High School, both in Springville, he entered the U.S. Army and was stationed at Ft. Richardson, AK. He thoroughly enjoyed his time there skiing and exploring the beautiful Alaskan landscape. One of his favorite stories was to relate his unique experience of marching in the celebration parade when Alaska became a state in 1959. After his enlistment ended, Maurice returned to Springville to work a few years on the family farm. He then attended Alfred Agriculture and Technical Institute and continued on to West Virginia University in Morgantown WV, where he received his Bachelors Degree in Agriculture Education. From there, he and wife Betty returned to Western New York, buying a home in Angelica where they have resided for 45 years. Maurice was hired to teach at the new BOCES Career and Technical Center in Belmont NY in its inaugural year. As the Conservation and Heavy Equipment Operation teacher, he always felt fortunate that he had the “original hand” in the development of the 300 acre site at the school. Later, he facilitated the construction of the first operating sawmill at the Center. However, the professional accomplishment for which he was most known was the development of the maple syrup production operation there. Many evenings, weekends, and spring breaks were spent in the woods collecting and boiling sap. His students were very eager to also give of their time and participate in the experience, and many of them went on to establish sugar-making operations at regional farms. During several summers, Maurice directed the Youth Conservation Corps (YCC), a federally funded program for the implementation of pavilions and nature trails in various local state forests. As a teacher he touched the lives of so many students throughout Allegany County that the Hannons could never attend a public event or be at a restaurant or out shopping without some former student enthusiastically greeting Maurice with a “Hello, Mr. Hannon, remember me?” He thoroughly enjoyed all of these conversations. Maurice served in various public capacities in his lifetime. He was a member of the Angelica Village Board, the Conservation Department Soils and Natural Resources Committee, the Angelica Conservation Club, and the Angelica Boosters Committee, helping with many Heritage Days Weekends in the town park. His biggest contribution to public service occurred after he retired from teaching when he gave much time and effort to the merger committee for the former Angelica and Belmont Central Schools. After the establishment of the new Genesee Valley Central School in 1996, he served as its first School Board President. Mr. Hannon contributed his energies over the years as an usher, Parish Council President and the annual Catholic Charities Chairman for the former Sacred Heart Church in Angelica. Whenever a new priest was assigned to the parish, he would spend considerable time with Maurice getting acclimated to the parish operations. In retirement, Mr. Hannon was able to pursue two of his favorite activities. One was travel and he enjoyed revisiting the places of his Army deployment in Alaska. His interest in Genealogy allowed him time to do in depth research on his Hannon family line and also his wife’s Murphy family line. In connection with this interest, the Hannons were able to make several trips to Ireland to visit the exact sites/homesteads of their ancestors. Maurice was one of the true descendants who could regale all with that famous Irish story telling ability! He is survived by his wife, Betty, and three children: John is Associate Dean of Students at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh PA; Bart is an Allegany County Deputy Sheriff; and Colleen follows in her father’s footsteps working in education. He is survived by one brother, Michael Hannon, and two sisters, Margaret Keeney-Fink and Kathleen Lunders, and he was predeceased by one brother, James Hannon. Maurice’s recent pride and joy has been his only grandchild, Molly Rose Hannon, daughter of Bart and wife Kim. He was her first babysitter and had continued daily to enjoy her gifts of general joy and enthusiasm for life. She definitely inherited her grandfather’s humor and storytelling ability. To send a remembrance to the family or to light a candle in Maurice’s name please visit www.brownandpowersfuneralhomes.com Visitation will occur at Brown and Powers Funeral Home in Angelica on Tuesday, July 22 between 2 and 4 p.m. and between 7 and 9 p.m. The funeral Mass will be celebrated at Holy Family Church in Belmont on Wednesday, July 23 at 11 a.m. Co-Celebrants for the Mass will be Rev. Dennis J.J. Mancusco and Rev. William Bigelow, a cousin of Maurice. Burial will follow at Until the Day Dawn Cemetery in Angelica.

Patrick E. “Pat” Mahany – 88 – Poags Hole Rd., Arkport, died early Thursday morning (July 24, 2014) after living a long and full life.

Born in Easton, ME on August 6, 1925, he was the son of Eldon & Delia (Long) Mahany.

Pat grew up in Easton, ME where he graduated from Easton High School in 1943 with “honors.”  He was a veteran of WWII, serving in the US Army.  While in the army, Pat was stationed in France, Luxemburg, and Belgium and was a recipient of the Purple Heart Medal along with numerous other medals.  His dedication for his country and fellow patriots continued to run deep through his veins his entire life.

Moving to the Arkport area in 1947, Pat established Patrick E. Mahany & Sons, Inc., a potato and grain farm located in Arkport.  He, along with his sons, operated the business until his “retirement” in 1981.  Since 1996, he has been instrumental in the day to day operation of Sun Valley Campsites in Arkport (near Canaseraga).  Since 1983, Pat has spent the winter months in Florida with his daughter, Michelle.  While in Florida, he gave a valiant attempt to golf and play tennis – “not his cup of tea.”

Pat was also an avid snow skier.  He not only skied locally, but also traveled to places such as Colorado, Maine, Vermont, and Canada to ski with close friends and family.  He enjoyed a nice warm cup of hot buttered rum and chili that his wife, Phyllis, would make for him to keep warm.  He never wore anything other than his cowboy hat while skiing, so he needed all the help he could to keep warm.  He was an active skier until he was 82 years young!

He was a member of Our Lady of the Valley Parish and a communicant of St. Ann’s Church.  In recent years, he was a member of St. Mary’s Church in Canaseraga.

Pat was married on November 26, 1947 to the former Phyllis Millard who died in 2002.  He was also preceded in death by his son, Timothy Mahany who died May 8, 2014, his grandson Anthony “Tony” Mahany who died in 1999, his brothers Vincent Mahany and Joseph Mahany.
