Beryl Raner Jones Canisteo Beryl Raner Jones, 94, formerly of North Street, passed away Tuesday (June 9, 2015) at McAuley Manor where she had resided the past 3 years. Born in Auburn, NY, February 9, 1921, the daughter of George and Eliza Mae Gilfus Amerman, she had resided in Auburn area all her life prior to moving to Almond in 1978. She later relocated to Canisteo. While in Auburn, Beryl had been employed as a floor manager for Auburn Leather Crafters. She was a member of the Almond Union of Churches, RSVP where she was honored for over 4000 hours of volunteering in 2004, an active member of the Buena Vista, Canisteo and Almond Senior Citizens , the Almond Historical Society, an active participant in ACCESS-Medicare, and a long time volunteer in House of Concern in Seneca Falls. She was predeceased by her parents, her husbands, Harold Raner in 2002, and Leo Jones in 2012. She is survived by her daughter, Brenda (John) Goldian of Middlebury Center, Pennsylvania, two step-daughters, Donna Jones Morse of Kentucky, and Diana Jones (Roger) Parulski of Bath, 2 grandchildren, 5 great grandchildren, four step-grandchildren, four step great grandchildren and four step-great great grandchildren. David G. Stryker

David G. Stryker – 73 – of 8373 State Route 961F, Arkport, died unexpectedly Tuesday morning (June 9, 2015) following a brief illness.

Born in Thurston, NY on January 9, 1942, he was the son of Harlowe & Delores (Bates) Stryker.

Dave grew up in Wheeler, NY and attended Haverling High School in Bath.  He had been employed for several years doing general farm work on area farms and also serving as a backhoe operator digging graves & setting cemetery vaults.

He was a career Veteran of the US Army, serving his country for about 24 years.  As a combat veteran, Dave was stationed in many locations throughout the world, including Kentucky, Vietnam, Guam, Japan, Germany, Washington and California. He retired in 1986 as a 1st Sergeant.

Following his retirement from the US Army, David was employed for several years as an auto mechanic for Harwood Service Station in Hornell and also worked for the Democrat & Chronicle Newspaper, delivering newspapers throughout the Honeyoye, Bristol & Canandaigua area.

David was an avid Buffalo Bills and New York Yankee fan.  He was a true outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting, fishing and spending time in the woods.  He truly loved caring for and spending time with his family.

In addition to his parents, Dave was preceded in death by many brothers & sisters.

He was married on October 9, 1965 to the former Janice Hadley who survives.  Also surviving are 1 son, David Stryker of North Hornell; 1 daughter, Annette (Terry) Connery of Wisconsin; 2 brothers, Harlow (Pat Clarke) Stryker of Bath and Dan (Andrea) Stryker of Prattsburg; 2 sisters, Deanna (Vince) Chapman of Painted Post and Arlene Jackson of Bath; his grandchildren, Erin Stryker, Ashley Stryker, Kjrsten Okland, Joseph Sprague, Jalena Sprague and Jaice Sprague; his great-granddaughter, Rebecca Romero; several nieces & nephews.

At David’s request there will be no calling hours.  Private services will be held at the convenience of the family.

Funeral arrangements are in care of the Dagon Funeral Home, 38 Church St., Hornell, NY.

Karl W. Secondo

Karl W. Secondo – 77 – of 8590 County Rt. 13, Bath, NY died unexpectedly on Sunday (June 7, 2015) at his home.

Born in Hornell on January 18, 1938, he was the son of Frank & Edna (Norton) Secondo.  He has resided in the Bath area since 1983.

Karl grew up in Hornell and was a graduate of Hornell High School (class of 1956).  Following his high school graduation, he enlisted in the US Marine Corp where he served his country for three years. 

In 1959, following his honorable discharge from the Marine Corps, Karl began working as a police officer for the Canisteo Police Department.  He was a graduate of Police School in Watkins Glen and also Advance Police School at Geneseo where he took classes in criminal investigation.  In 1962 he left the Canisteo Police Department to become Police Chief of the Hammondsport Police Department, a position he held for the next 9 years.  In 1971, Karl left the Hammondsport Police Department and began his new career with the Steuben County Sheriff’s Office as a Deputy Sheriff.  In 1975, he began taking classes with the FBI Academy and later became an FBI Investigator for the Sheriff’s Department.  During this time, Karl also served as an Investigator for the District Attorney’s Office.  He retired in 1997 as Steuben County Undersheriff. 

Karl was a member of the Bath Elks Lodge, the Bath American Legion and also the FBI Academy Association.  He had a deep love of music (especially Elvis Presley) and, in his younger years, enjoyed dancing (especially the “Jitter-Bug”).  He loved spending time in the kitchen and was a very good cook.  Although Karl’s love of law enforcement seemed to be the main focus of his life, it never out-weighed his love of his family.  He had many, many friends and always had a positive impact on everyone that knew him. 

Surviving are his son, Fran (Charlene) Secondo of Corning; 2 daughters, Christine Secondo of Batavia and Lisa (Fred) Stephen of Rochester; their mother, Barbara; 1 brother, Frank Secondo of Arizona; 5 sisters, Mary Ann (Frank) Losecco of Hornell, Dorothy Ermy of Hornell, Joanne (Leo) Porcaro of Hornell, Janice (Stan) Davis of Arizona and Patty Lenhart of Arizona; 7 grandchildren, Tony Secondo, Caitlin (Robert) Hall, Amanda (Bruce) Hawkesworth, Joshua Secondo, Megan McLaughlin, Lauren McLaughlin & Casey McLaughlin; 3 great-grandchildren, Arianna Hall, Greysen Hall & Jackson Hall; several nieces & nephews.  He will also be sadly missed by his faithful companion, “Nico”.

The family of Karl W. Secondo will receive friends on Thursday from 4:00 PM – 7:00 PM at the Dagon Funeral Home, 38 Church St., Hornell, NY.   A Mass of Christian Burial, along with full military honors, will be celebrated on Friday at 10:00 AM at St. Ann’s Church.  Burial will be in the Bath National Cemetery, Bath, NY.

Karl’s family request that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in his name be made to the American Diabetes Association, PO Box 13067, Alexandria, VA 22312 or to the American Heart Association, PO Box 3049, Syracuse, NY 13220.  Memorial forms will be available at the Dagon Funeral Home or click here to print a memorial form.

Megan L. Robie Canisteo Megan L. Robie, 15, of 67 Maple St., went to be with her Lord and Savior unexpectedly on Friday (June 12, 2015). Born in Corning, NY, February 17, 2000, the daughter of Douglas and Carol Burleson Robie, she had resided in Canisteo since 2002. Megan was just completing her Freshman year at the Canisteo-Greenwood Central School. Megan enjoyed playing tennis, bowling on the youth league, and in her early life, enjoyed playing softball. She attended the Faith Independent Baptist Church in Canisteo where she assisted in Junior Church and enjoyed attending the Corning Area Bible Club Camp. She was predeceased by her maternal grandparents, Elizabeth and Benjamin Burleson, and her paternal grandmother, Katherine Robie. She is survived by her parents, Douglas and Carol Robie of Canisteo, her sister, Katherine Robie of Canisteo, her maternal grandmother, Sandra Dahl of Florida and paternal grandfather, Henry Robie of Savona. She is also survived by several aunts, uncles and cousins. Sandra Gay Hunt Wellsville/Belmont Sandra Gay Hunt 79, recently of the Wellsville Manor, and formerly of Belmont, died Thursday (June 11, 2015) after an extended illness. Sandra was born May 16, 1936 at home in Angelica, New York, the daughter of Clifford and Rosemary Stillwill Grastorf. On August 16, 1952, in Belmont she married Leo “Don” Hunt. Sandra was a graduate of Belmont High School, Class of 1952. She started her career in 1956, and along with her husband Don, Bayard Tullar, and Conrad Church, they formed Genesee Valley Nurseries, which did landscaping for New York State until the company was sold in 1996. In addition The Hunt’s owned the Belmont Laundry, and Warsaw and Perry car washes, which their son Douglas “Pat” Hunt still owns and operates today. Mrs. Hunt was a member of the St. Mary’s Church in Belmont, the Republican Women’s Club, and other organizations. Mrs. Hunt was a very active business woman; she was happiest sitting at her desk, running her numerous businesses, while raising 8 children! Surviving are 7 children Douglas “Pat” Hunt of Belmont, Denise Hart of Angelica, Daryl “Joe” Hunt, Dennis (Billy Jo) Hunt, Daniel (Joy) Hunt, and Deborah Hunt all of Belmont, and Donald “Mike” Hunt of Friendship, several grandchildren, great grandchildren, and her son in law William Hart of Caneadea. She was predeceased by her husband Don in 2004, her mother Rosemary in 2012, her father Clifford and son David Leo Hunt in 1999, and her granddaughter Paige Hunt in 2007. A Graveside Memorial+ Service will be held on Friday (July 10, 2015) at 11:00am at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Belmont, with Deacon Frank Pasquale officiating. Darren L. Monahan Hornell Darren L. Monahan, 53, of 126 Hill Street, passed away Sunday (June 14, 2015) at his home. Born in Hornell, NY, May 16, 1962, the son of Leslie and Carol Clark Monahan, he had resided in Hornell the past several years. He was a graduate of Andover Central School and had been employed at Gunlocke in Wayland. He was a member of the Hornell VFW, the Hornell Moose Lodge and the Hornell Association. He was predeceased by his brother, Donald Monahan as well as both his maternal and paternal grandparents. He is survived by his parents, Leslie and Carol Monahan of Andover, his brother, James R. Robert F. Raish Sr. Hornell Robert F. Raish, Sr. 85, of 79 Crosby Street, passed away early Thursday morning (June 18, 2015) in at his home. Born in Penn Yan, NY, April 3, 1930, the son of Jesse and Helen Taylor Raish, he had resided in Hornell for the past 80 years. In his early life, Bob worked with his father in the operation of Raish Plumbing in Hornell, He later became the Plumbing Inspector for the City of Hornell, and retired as the Codes Enforcement Officer for the City of Hornell. He served his country as a member of the United States Army and was a member of the AMVETS and the Hornell Association. He was predeceased by his parents, his wife Shirley and his son Larry, both in 2008, as well as two brothers, William and Thomas Raish. He is survived by his sons, Robert (Jeanne) Raish Jr. of Canisteo and Edward (Cari) Raish of Hornell, his daughter-in-law, Janice Raish of Florida and his grandchildren, Jason Raish, Robert Raish, Karissa (Keith) Lemont, Darielle (Brad) Bidwell, Alaina Raish, Jared Raish, and Tiffany (D.J. Born in Wellsville, March 1, 1950, the daughter of Albert and Jean (Wilcox) Atkinson, graduating from Angelica Central School, she had resided in Florida most of her life, returning to the area in 2012. Liz was a cook at Ayre’s Restaurant in Jacksonville, Florida for many years. She enjoyed cooking, crafts, gardening, and dogs especially Boston Terrier’s. She was predeceased by her parents, a brother Howard, and sister Ruth . She is survived by 2 daughters Wendy (Mark) Roboski of Angelica, Holly Harrington of Angelica, and her son Richard Harrington II of Angelica, her best friend and companion tony Witczak, 4 sisters Mary Lou, Sandy, Rita Peangatelli, Betty Jean, 4 brothers Joseph, Marshall, Randy and Gary, 7 grandchildren, 4 great grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. Michael A. Foley – (81) – of 10641 Homage Ave., Whittier CA, formerly of Rochester, died Wednesday morning (June 10, 2015) at his home, following a long illness.

Born in Rochester, NY on November 15, 1933, he was the son of John & Margaret I. (Murphy) Foley. 

Mike grew up in Rochester and has resided in California since 1957.  He had been employed by Eastman Kodak in Rochester for 5 years, in LA as a dock worker at T.I.M.E  D-C Freight Lines from 1959-1981.  He later worked for Commerce Consolidators for about 7 years, retiring in 1993.

Mike was a life time member of the Moose Club of the Rochester, Bullhead City and La Habra Chapters; life time Member of the Sons of the American Legion; life time Member of the American Legion; member of the Alliance for Retired American – Charter Member; member of the Good Sam Club and member of the Teamster Retirees Association.
 
He was preceded in death by his parents, John & Margaret Foley, his son, Michael E. Foley; and also his brothers, John Foley & Timothy W. Foley.

Mike was married on December 27, 1951 to the former A. Jean Howe who survives.  Also surviving are 1 daughter, Patricia Jean (Ric) Saavedra of Saipan, Northern Mariana Islands; 1 sister, Margaret McKinney of Victor, NY; his in-laws, Carol Foley of Henrietta, Francis (Barbara) Howe of South Dansville, Dean “Ed” (Carie) Howe of Arkport and Randy Howe of Daytona Beach, FL; 1 grandson, Aaron Nakahara; 5 step-grandchildren, Isaac, James, Abigail, Elizabeth and Marcos; several nieces, nephews and 2 great grandsons.

At Mike’s request there will be no calling hours.  A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday (June 27, 2015) at the Dagon Funeral Home, 38 Church St., Hornell, NY, at a time to be announced.  Final interment will be in Arkport cemetery.

Lawrence E. Terry Hornell Lawrence E. Terry, 95, of 54 Cedar St, passed away Saturday (June 20, 2015) at the Hornell Gardens. Born in Hornell, NY, January 16, 1920, the son of Raymond and Maude Cole Terry, he had resided in Hornell in his early life, later resided in Missouri and in Texas before returning to Hornell in 1975. He was employed as a finance officer for Beneficial Finance in Missouri for 25 years. He was a graduate of Hornell High School. Larry served his country as a member of the United States Army during World War II from 1942-1945. He was a member of the Hornell Elks Lodge, the VFW, the Moose Lodge, and was a member of Evening Star Lodge #44 F&AM. He was predeceased by his parents, wife Irene M. Terry in 1977, his life partner Jeanette Jones in 2008, his 2 sisters Lucille Peck and Ethel Sheeley, and 1 brother LeRoy Terry. He is survived by his son Shawn (Linda) Terry of West Virginia, a daughter Marcia (Jeffery) Clark of Hornell, his step children who affectionately called him “Pops” Rhonda Hills, Pam Lippincott, Sheila Jackson, Steven Jones, Roberta Dunham, and Tina Roberts. Charles K. Pomeroy Hornell Charles K. Pomeroy, 61, of 50 Mill Street, passed away unexpectedly Monday (June 22, 2015) . Born in Hornell, NY, November 7, 1953, the son of Charles L. and Betsy Werner Pomeroy, he had resided in Hornell all his life. He was a graduate of Hornell High School, class of 1971, and had served his country as a member of the United States Navy from 1971-1975. He had been employed at the former General Electric and Morrison Knudsen, and at Elsenheimer’s for over 20 years where he was in charge of maintenance and all carpentry. He later became self employed as a painting and carpentry contractor in Hornell. He took great pride in his craft and was well respected for his work ethic. Charlie was an avid hunter and fisherman, enjoyed camping and especially riding his “Harley”. He will be most remembered for the love of his family and will be sadly missed by his mother, brother and sisters. Charlie was a member of Our Lady of The Valley Parish and a communicant of the former St. Ignatius Loyola Church, and currently a communicant of St. Ann’s Church in Hornell. He was also a member of the Hornell American Legion Post. He was predeceased by his father. He is survived by his mother, Betsy Pomeroy of Hornell, his brother, Mark Pomeroy of Hornell and three sisters, Deborah Pomeroy of Pennsylvania, Melissa (Michael) McKee of Hornell, and Mary Paula Pomeroy of Bath, his half-sister, Michelle Pomeroy of Hornell and her mother Margaret Pomeroy of Hornell, aunt and uncle, Carol and Robert Stewart of Hartsville, several nieces, nephews and cousins. Lucille M. Rhow Canisteo Lucille M. Rhow, 93, formerly of Canisteo passed away Friday (June 26, 2015) at the Friendly Home in Rochester. Born in Clarksville, May 27, 1922, the daughter of Thad and Bertha Holly, she had resided in Canisteo most of her life. Lucille was a communicant of the former St. Joachims Church in Canisteo and was a member of the Pounce Card Club. She loved flowers and gardening but most of all, her family. In addition to her parent’s Lucille was predeceased by her husband, Carl in 1994, three brothers, Ken and Paul Holly, Harvey Kerstetter, one sister Christine Wolford, one great granddaughter Kinley Groseth. She will be sadly missed by one daughter, Sue (Mark) Todd of Penfield, two sisters, Josephine Cousins of Rockville FL and Vickie Bogetti of PA, two granddaughters, Nicole (Cory) Groseth and Jacklyn (Phillips) Booker, six great grandchildren, Ashley, Brynn and Declan Groseth, Sydney, Carter and Lucy Booker. Arthur Raymond Yeaples Angelica Arthur Raymond Yeaples, 73, of Peavy Rd. passed away Wednesday (July 1, 2015) at Jones Memorial Hospital surrounded by his family and loved ones after a long illness. Born in Rew PA the son of Donald and Bernice Blackmon Yeaples, originally from Moody Hollow PA, he had resided in Angelica for the past several years. As a young man he worked in the oil fields with his father and uncle and in his later years he was a carpenter a “jack of all trades and master of none”. He retired in Angelica in 1999 for a simpler life with his family where he especially enjoyed his time with his many grandchildren. Arthur served his country in the United States Air Force from 1959 to 1961. In addition to his parent’s Arthur was predeceased by one daughter, Emma Yeaples, siblings, Barbara Tennant, Sandra Teribery, Ronald Yeaples, Dorothy Stephenson, Ruth Soules and Bonnie Young. He is survived by his wife, Marlene Bean Yeaples of Angelica, nine children including Samantha (Eric) Yeaples, Lewis (Betsy) Yeaples and William Yeaples, several grandchildren including, Dillion, Kaitlyn, Derrick, Haley, Sierra and Evan, siblings, Fran Wilcox, Betty Hites and David Yeaples, several nieces and nephews and all of his lost boys and girls. Arlinda M. (Preston) Negron Hornell Arlinda M. (Preston) Negron, 72, of Hornell St., passed away Tuesday (July 7, 2015) at her home. Born in Hornell, March 14, 1943, the daughter of John and Marjorie Peck Flynn, she had resided in Hornell all her life. Arlinda was a mother to the community children and always took them in during their times of troubles and loved teaching children to dance. Arlinda also loved singing, Vikings football team, collectables, dream catchers and Elvis. She was also active in Relay for Life. In addition to her parent’s she was predeceased by, two children, Jeffrey and Dahl Preston, four brothers, Raymond “Buster” Masterson, Raoul Masterson, Donald Masterson and Terry Myer, three sisters, Delores Sirrianni, Juanita “Neet” Harrington and Naomi Hurlburt, She is survived by her longtime companion, Leo Preston of Hornell, her children, David (Melannie) Negron of Canisteo, Kay (Merton III) Sammis of Rocky Top TN, Robert (Melissa) Preston of Hornell, Christopher (Sheryl) Preston Sr. of Mt. Morris, Raeabella (James) Franklin of Wellsville, Jody (Sharon Welch) Preston of Hornell, Opieadiea “Opie” (Roseanne) Preston of Hornell, and Cherkee (Sarah Lewis) Preston of Canisteo, brothers, Dale (Sue) Flynn of Hornell, Ricky (Sandy) Myers of Alfred, Patrick (Sue) Moore of Corning and Ernie (Mary) Myers of Hornell, sisters, Barbaranne Lamphier of Santa Anna CA, several grand and great grandchildren.
