Catherine (DeSanto) Smart

Catherine (DeSanto) Smart – (85) – a resident of Updyke’s Willow Ridge Nursing Facility, formerly of Dansville, died Monday afternoon (May 11, 2015) at Hornell Gardens, following a brief illness.

A native of Hornell, she was born March 13, 1930 and was the daughter of Nicholas and Catherine (Changose) DeSanto.

Catherine grew up in Hornell and was a graduate of St. Ann’s School and later graduated from Hornell High School.

She resided in Dansville for nearly 50 years where she was employed at Rochester Telephone and also The Dansville Press.  While living in Dansville, Catherine was a communicant of St. Mary’s Church.

Catherine was married to Norman G. Smart who died in 2003.  Following the death of her husband, she moved to Arkport where she lived until returning to Hornell about 6 years ago. 
She was a member of Our Lady of the Valley Parish and a communicant of St. Ann’s Church.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by six sisters, Rose DiVincenzo, Mary Leto, Louise Fratercangelo, Lucy Chapman, Anna Datini and Dorothy DeSanto; and two brothers, Joseph DeSanto and Nick DeSanto.

Surviving are her son, Greg (Sharon) Smart of McKinney, TX; 2 brothers, Francis “Sonny” (Ellen) DeSanto of Hornell, and Richard (Josephine) DeSanto of Rochester; three sisters, Theresa (Denny) Napolione of Olean, Helen (Joe) Pardi of Arkport, Margaret “Marge” DeSanto of Hornell; 3 grandchildren, Lauren (James) Moore of Hornell, Eric Smart of Atlanta, NY and Melissa (Richard) Solorio of Midlothian, TX; 2 great-grandchildren, Jessica and James, JR; and many nieces and nephews.

At Catherine’s request there will be no calling hours.  A private grave-side service will be held at the convenience of the family in Holy Cross Cemetery, Dansville, NY.  Funeral arrangements are in care of the Dagon Funeral Home, 38 Church St., Hornell, NY.

Catherine’s family requests that memorial contributions in her name be made to St. Ann’s Academy, PO Box 446, Hornell, NY.

Carmella E. Parlavecchio

Carmella E. Parlavecchio answered her call on Tuesday, May 12th, 2015 following surgery at Strong Memorial Hospital.  So many hearts are feeling sadness because she was here, and because she was loved.

Born in Hornell on September 17, 1924, she was the daughter of Rosario & Lucy (Salerno) Parlavecchio.

Carmella grew up in Hornell and attended St. Ann’s School.  She was a member of Our Lady of the Valley Parish and a communicant of St. Ann’s Church.

She was employed for many years at the former Merrill Hosiery in Hornell and later was employed at St. James Mercy Hospital as a SPD Technician.  Following her retirement she enjoyed baking and cooking for family and friends.  She especially loved decorating during the holidays and enjoyed rooting for the New York Yankees and Buffalo Bills.

Carmella leaves a legacy rich in compassion and caring as a caregiver for her mom and sisters.  She possessed an incredible capacity for generosity.

In addition to her parents, Carmella was preceded in death by 3 brothers, Anthony Parlave, James Parlavecchio and Sam Parlavecchio;

3 sisters, Mary Parlavecchio, Rose Macaluso and Josephine Cipola.

Surviving are 2 sisters, Ann Parlavecchio of Hornell and Rachel Parlavecchio RSM of Hornell; many nieces, nephews and cousins.

At Carmella’s request there will be no prior calling hours.  Family and friends are invited to attend a Prayer Service conducted by Sr. Rachel Parlavecchio and Sr. Livia Ann Ruocco on Sunday, May 17, 2015 at 7:00 PM at the Dagon Funeral Home, 38 Church St., Hornell, NY.  Private graveside service will be held on Monday at St. Ann’s Cemetery.

Carmella’s family request that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in her name be made to St. Ann’s Academy, PO Box 446, Hornell, NY 14843.  Memorial forms will be available at the Dagon Funeral Home.  In addition, we are all requested to simply open our hearts to the needs around us, especially the poor and elderly.

Shirley Russell

Shirley D. Russell Elizabethton, Tennessee Shirley D. Russell, 85, formerly of Purdy Creek Road in Canisteo, passed away early Sunday morning, (May 17, 2015) at the Johnson City Medical Center in Johnson City, Tennessee. Born in Howard, NY, August 31, 1929, the son of Harold H. and Kathryn Harris Russell, he moved to Canisteo in 1965. He and his wife Phyllis moved to Zephyrhills Florida in 2004 until moving to Elizabethton to reside with their daughter and son-in-law in 2013. Shirley was a graduate of Canisteo Central School, class of 1948, and had been employed as a shipping and receiving foreman at the former SKF Industries in Hornell prior to his retirement in 1985. Shirley was a member of the First Baptist Church in Canisteo and the Big Springs Baptist Church in Elizabethton, TN; and had been active in masonry for several years. He was a member and past master of Morning Star Lodge #65 F&AM of Canisteo, a former member of the former Canisteo Chapter #210, Order of Eastern Star as well as a member and past patron of the Jasper Chapter #752, Order of Eastern Star. He was also a member of the Dashiell Lodge #238 in Elizabethton, TN. He was predeceased by his parents, his sister, Mary Houghtaling, his brothers: Joel Russell, Thomas Russell, Jack Russell and Richard Russell. He is survived by his wife, Phyllis Woodhouse Russell to whom he was married in Bath on February 20, 1959; his daughter, Cynthia (Tom) Slocum of Elizabethton, TN; his sons, William (Jeanne) Russell of Raleigh, NC., and Timothy (Terri) Russell of Elmira Heights; his sisters, Bonnie McNaughton and Karleen House both of Colorado, his brothers, Robert (Joan) Russell of Canisteo, and Frank (Deanna) Russell of Andover, and brother-in law James Houghtaling , and sister-in-law Eleanor Russell of Hornell, (7) grandchildren, (10) great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Suzanne F. “Suzi” Bennett Mt. Morris Suzanne F. ”Suzi” Bennett, 53, of 36 Narry Lane, passed away Sunday (May 17, 2015) at Noyes Hospital in Dansville after a long and courageous battle with diabetes. Born in Hornell, NY, February 18, 1962, the daughter of Robert and Jacqueline McKibben Widmer, she had resided in Arkport during her early life and in Mt. Morris the past 20 years. Suzi was a graduate of Arkport Central School, class of 1980, and received her LPN degree thru the Hornell BOCES. She had been employed as an LPN for Steuben, Allegany and Livingston-Wyoming Arc. She was a member of Our Lady of The Valley Parish and a communicant of St. Ann’s Church in Hornell. She was a member of the Mt. Morris Ambulance Corp., a member of several volunteer fire departments, and was active in the Special Olympics. She is survived by her husband, Edward Bennett of Mt. Morris, her parents, Robert and Jacqueline Widmer of Arkport, 2 step-sons, Edward (Mary) Bennett of Dansville, and Daniel (Sarah) Bennett of Mt. Gary R. Thompson

Gary R. Thompson – 65 – of 368 Ontario St., Hornell, died Saturday evening (May 16, 2015) at Rochester General Hospital, following a long illness.

A native and life resident of Hornell, he was born July 27, 1949, and was the son of Kenneth & Vesta “Jean” (Graham) Thompson.

Gary grew up in Hornell and was a graduate of Hornell High School (class of 1967).  Following graduation, he worked briefly on the “road crew” for the Hornell Department of Public Works.

In 1969, he was drafted in to the US Army and served his country until his Honorable Discharge in 1971.  He was a member of the 1st Battalion, 6th Infantry, 198th Brigade Americal Division (Long Range Recon). While serving in the Army, Gary was stationed for about a year in Viet Nam where he was wounded twice.  He was the recipient of the 2 Bronze Stars and also Purple Heart Medal.  Gary was exceptionally patriotic and proud of his military service.

Following his discharge from the military, Gary returned to work for the Hornell Department of Public Works in several capacities.  In 1975, he began working at the Hornell Waste Water Treatment Plant where he remained until his retirement in 2005 as Chief Operator.

A talented craftsman & an exceptional woodworker, Gary was able to make just about anything out of wood.  He enjoyed spending the summer months at his cottage at Silver Lake.  He was a former member of the Hornell American Legion and the Hornell VFW.

Gary will forever be remembered as a “funny guy” with a quick wit a fantastic sense of humor.  He could easily put a smile on everyone’s face with his humorous remarks and NO ONE WAS SAFE!! Gary had a deep love and appreciation of music.  He had a beautiful voice and loved playing guitar & singing.  He will be sadly missed by everyone that had the pleasure of knowing him.

He was married on August 2, 1968 to the former Barbara Putallaz who survives.  Also surviving are 2 daughters, Denise L. (Monte Trimble) Thompson of Arkport and Lorri (Alec) Lauzze of Victor, NY; 1 son, Mark R. Thompson of Reno, NV; 1 brother, Kenneth (Diane) Thompson of Perry, NY; 5 grandchildren, Alec Lauzze, Luke Lauzze, Natalie Trimble, Mia Trimble and Evan Trimble; several nieces & nephews.

Although Gary always said that he wanted a “Viking Funeral” at Silver Lake, the family of Gary R. Thompson will receive friends on Thursday from 4:00 PM – 7:00 PM at the Dagon Funeral Home, 38 Church St., Hornell, NY where a Memorial Service with full military honors will be held on Friday at 11:00 AM with Deacon Robert McCormick officiating. 

Gary’s family request that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in his name be made to The Disabled American Veterans Association, PO Box 14301, Cincinnati, OH 45250-0301.  Memorial forms will be available at the Dagon Funeral Home or click here to print a memorial form.

Lawrence E. Kame

Lawrence E. “Larry” Kame – 77 – of 1073 Sharps Hill Road, Arkport, died early Wednesday morning at Rochester General Hospital following a brief illness. 

Born in Hornell on October 2, 1937, he was the son of Floyd & Ruth (Bossard) Kame. 

Larry, affectionately known as “Huck”, grew up in Arkport and was a graduate of Arkport Central School (class of 1955).  He was a veteran of the US Air Force, serving his country from 1958 – 1962.  While serving in the military, he was stationed at several locations including Iceland and Morocco. 

In 1962, Larry began working for AT&T which later became New York Telephone and then Verizon.  He retired in 1992 as line manager following 30 years of service. 

Larry had been a member of the Arkport American Legion, Hornell Moose and the G. Carducci Lodge (Sons of Italy).  He was and avid New York Yankee fan but his greatest joy was spending time with his family — especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. 

He was married on February 27, 1960 to the former Muriel Norton who died May 1, 2002.  He was also preceded in death by his daughter, Theresa “Terri” Kame who died in 1982. 

Larry was married on December 19, 2003 to the former Joanne McMichael Rechichi who survives.  Also surviving are 2 daughters, Tracy (Don) Wagoner of Canton, GA and Lori (Tim) FitzGerald of Oak Park, CA; 2 step-daughters, Christine Yanni of Bath and Mary (Ron Campbell) Reynolds of Hornell; 1 step-son, Thomas (Yvonne) Rechichi of Arkport; 2 sisters, Irene Tychi of Hornell and Betty (Richard) Dresser of Arkport; 1 brother, Vincent (Patricia) Kame of Owego; 11 grandchildren; 5 great-grandchildren; several nieces & nephews. 

The family of Lawrence E. “Larry” Kame will receive friends on Friday from 4:00 PM – 7:00 PM at the Dagon Funeral Home, 38 Church St., Hornell, NY where a funeral service with full military honors will be held on Saturday at 11:00 AM with Deacon Robert McCormick officiating.  Burial will be in Heritage Hill Cemetery, Arkport, NY.

Ruby M. Chase Whitesville Ruby M. Chase, 91, formerly of Maple St. went to be with her Lord on Wednesday (May 20, 2015). Born in Woodbridge England May 19, 1924, to Arthur and Ethel Redit Rooke. Ruby married Harry W. Hutchison an American Serviceman serving in WWII in England on Nov. 5, 1944. When the war ended, she travelled to America on the USS Erickson which transported war brides and children to be reunited with their husbands. They settled in the Salamanca and Portville areas and raised three children. On June 28, 1967 she married Frank L. Chase, who predeceased her on Nov. 7, 2013. Ruby enjoyed family gatherings, knitting, camping, bird watching, and will be remembered most of all as being a loving family woman. She was a member of the Transatlantic Brides & Parents Assoc. as well as the Gospel Tabernacle. She worked for many years at the Portville Central School. In addition to her parents, Ruby was predeceased by her siblings, Jack, Doug, and Sal. She is survived by three children, Carol (Jim) Phillips of Virginia Beach, Dave (Janice) Hutchison and Cindy (Ron) Welch, both of Whitesville, two step-sons, Frank E. (Vickie) Chase of Whitesville and Randall Chase of Wellsville, two step-daughters, Sally Houston of Hornell and Tonya Whitsell of Rexville, several grand and great grandchildren. Marilyn J. Ahearn

Marilyn J. Ahearn – (77) – of 614 Pine Knoll Park, Arkport, died unexpectedly early Wednesday morning (May 20, 2015) at St. James Mercy Hospital, where she was taken by ambulance after being stricken at home.

Born in Hornell on May 5, 1938, she was the daughter of John & Delilia (Edwards) Muchler. 

Marilyn grew up in Hornell and was a graduate of Hornell High School (class of 1957).  Throughout the years, Marilyn lived in Hornell, Campbell (for about 4 years) and has resided in Arkport since 1999.

While in high school, Marilyn worked at the former June’s Ice Cream Store.  Following her high school graduation, she was employed for several years as a cashier at the former Loblaw’s Grocery Store in Hornell. 

Leaving the “work force” for several years to begin raising her family, she began working at Steuben Trust Company in 1975 as a bank teller, retiring in 2000 after 25 years of service.

Marilyn was an avid reader and enjoyed knitting and going for daily walks (before it became “fashionable”). 

She was married on September 14, 1957 to William F. “Bill” Ahearn who died in 1989.  She was also preceded in death by her brother, John Muchler; 3 sisters, her twin, Carolyn Schryver, Adeline Duell and Gladys Schubmehl.

Surviving are 2 daughters, Mary (Dwight) Smith of Arkport and Elizabeth Smith of Arkport; 2 sons, William F. (Kathy) Ahearn JR of West Henrietta and Kevin (Leslie) Ahearn of Carlin, NV; 1 sister, Pauline Stricker of Binghamton; 11 grandchildren; 3 great-grandchildren; several nieces & nephews.

The family of Marilyn J. Ahearn will receive friends on Saturday from 4:00 PM – 7:00 PM at the Dagon Funeral Home, 38 Church St., Hornell, NY where funeral & committal services will be held at the conclusion of calling hours at 7:00 PM with Deacon Robert McCormick officiating.  Burial will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery.

Randall Gleason

Randall L. Gleason Hornell Randall L. “Randy” Gleason, 73, of County Route 66, passed away unexpectedly Thursday (May 21, 2015) at his home. Born in Wellsville, NY, September 3, 1941, the son of Lyle and Lodee Boucher Gleason, he had resided in Wellsville, Addison, Canisteo and in Hornell the past 15 years. He was a graduate of Addison Central School, and had been employed in auto sales for most of his life, at the former Russ Davis Motor Sales in Hornell, West Herr in Dansville and Lamac in Hornell. He was also a licensed insurance agent for Purdential Insurance Company. Randy will be remembered for his love of playing horseshoes and bowling. He was predeceased by his parents, and his first wife, C. Elaine Gleason in 1988. He is survived by his wife, Diane Hatch Gleason, to whom he was married 25 years, four daughters, Kelly (Victor) Loomis of Cortland, Robin (Michael) Schultz of Buffalo, Rebecca (Jason Wiser) McCaig of Bath and Randee (Josh Welch) Gleason of PA., his sister, Linda Jennings of Rochester, step-brothers, Roger, and Clinton Risley of Addison, and Lawrence Risley of Florida, his step-mother, Genevieve Gleason of Florida, 8 Grandchildren, Emily Arthur, Jared Arthur, Elaina Oliver, Tricia Stanford, Tiarra Schultz, James Tompkins, Christopher Vanfleet, and Payton Wiser. Edwin J. Mighells Jr. Angelica Edwin J. Mighells, 78, of 190 West Main Street, passed away Monday (May 25, 2015) at Rochester General Hospital. Born in Great Valley, May 22, 1937, the son of Edwin J. and Doris Mighells, he was a long time resident of the area. After graduation he enlisted in the US Marines where he served from 1954-1958. He was employed as a truck driver most of his life. Ed was a member of the NRA, and enjoyed woodworking, fishing, traveling, and working on genealogy for the family tree. He was predeceased by his parents, and his wife Mary Lou (Hanchett) Mighells on August 11, 2009, whom he married August 15, 1959. He is survived by 2 daughters Mary F. Brownell of Alfred, Connie (Dwayne) Rose of Angelica, 2 sons Edwin (Velvet) Mighells III of Angelica, Jim (Paula) Mighells of Angelica, 2 sisters Anne Dobell of Hornell, Joyce Lorow of Howard, a brother James S. Gleeda M. Plank Almond Gleeda M. Plank, 72, formerly of Gayhart Road., passed away Monday (May 25, 2015) at the Hornell Gardens. Born in Hartsville, July 11, 1942, the daughter of Clayton and Alta Davis Stewart, she had resided in Caniseo, and Hornell before moving to Almond. She attended Canisteo Central School and had been employed at the former Marion Rohr’s in Hornell and had been employed as a cook in several area restaurants including the Texas Café, Woolworths Lunch Counter, Alfred College, and had owned and operated Plank’s Drive Inn in Alfred. She was a former member and past president of the ladies Auxiliary of the Hornell Eagles Club. Gleeda enjoyed quilting and all kinds of crafts, as well as making and decorating wedding and birthday cakes. She loved being outdoors and enjoyed camping and fishing with Gordy and the children. She was also an avid gardener and loved her flower gardens. In later years, she enjoyed Facebook, and other social media as a way of keeping in touch with family and friends. She was predeceased by her parents, her husband, Gordon Plank in 2012, and one brother, Sterling Stewart. She is survived by two daughters, Kimberly Sanford of Hornell and Teresa (Steven) Reep of Florida, her son, Timothy Plank of Hornell, a special niece, Melva (John) Fairchild of Virginia, a step-son, Tim (Bernadette) Kramer of Virginia, her sister, Alice Marvin of Pennsylvania, her grandchildren, Carrie Sanford, Matthew Bailey, Christian Bailey, Rachel Plank, MacKenzie Plank, Alexander Reep, her great grandson Konnor Winn, and two step-grandchildren, Gregory and Jonathan Kramer, several nieces & nephews. Charles Richard “Dick” Crandall – (91) – formerly of 385 Fairview Ave., Hornell, died Friday evening (May 29, 2015) at McAuley Manor where he had resided for the past 4 years.

A native & life resident of Hornell, he was born January 21, 1924, and was the son of Charles & Mary (Whitworth) Crandall.

Dick grew up in Hornell and was a graduate of Hornell High School where he served as class president of the class of 1943.  While in high school, he was a 4 year member of the Red Raider Football Team and was captain of the team during his senior year. 

He was a veteran of WWII, serving in the US Army Air Force.  As a 1st Lieutenant, he served as Co-Pilot, flying B-24 Bombers in over 200 missions.  He was featured, by name, in two books, “Aluminum Trail” and “Somewhere We Will Find You” about the pilots & co-pilots of WWII.  For many years he has been a member of the Hornell American Legion.

Following his honorable discharge from the service, Dick worked for about 13 years at the Erie Railroad Shops.  For several years he owned & operated the Kendall Service Station in Hornell.  For 20 years, he was employed at the New York State Conservation Department, serving as fire inspector and as instructor for forest rangers.  Throughout the years, Dick made many appearances with Smokey the Bear on Television Shows and in Schools, promoting fire safety.

Dick enjoyed and excelled in horseshoe pitching, playing in and winning many tournaments & competitions.  He was instrumental in the formation of the Hornell Horseshoe League and also served as president of the NYS Horseshoe Association for 3 years.  He had been an avid bowler and bowled in many leagues.  For several years, Dick served as an instructor in the Hornell Junior Bowling League. 

He volunteered his time as a coach in the Midget Football League for many years and served on the board of directors for both Hornell Midget Football League and Hornell Babe Ruth League. Dick also served as president of the Hornell Alumni Association.  He had a deep love of music and played keyboard for the “Banjo Boys”.  Dick enjoyed rooting for the Buffalo Bills and the Boston Red Sox, but mostly loved rooting & cheering for his grand-children at their sporting events. 

Dick was married on July 29, 1946 to the former Anne Arvidson who died September 18, 2013.  He was also preceded in death by his son, James E. Crandall who died in 1999; 3 brothers, Carl Crandall, Harold Crandall & Robert Crandall; his great-great granddaughter, Hannah Logan

Surviving are 2 daughters, Dianne (Randy) Tyner of Bradford, NY and Mary Ellen (Joe) Dropp of Hornell; 2 sons, Richard “Rick” (Marcia) Crandall of Hartsville and Steven (Sharon) Crandall of Hartsville; many grandchildren; great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; along with several nieces & nephews.

The family of Charles Richard “Dick” Crandall will receive friends on Wednesday from 4:00 PM until 7:00 PM at the Dagon Funeral Home, 38 Church St., Hornell, NY.  Funeral services will be held Thursday morning at 10:00 AM at St. Ann’s Church with Deacon Robert McCormick officiating.  Burial will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery with full military honors.

In recognition of Dick’s service to his country during WWII, the American Flag at the Dagon Funeral Home will be flown at half-staff.

Patricia A. McAllister Hornell Patricia A. McAllister, 75, of Marshall Ave., passed away Tuesday (June 2, 2015) at St. James Mercy Hospital. Born in Rhode Island, September 25, 1939, the daughter of Francis and Marion (Powers) Crowe, she had resided most of her life in Hornell. Pat was a member of Our Lady of the Valley Parish and a communicant of St. Ann’s Church as well as the AZB Sorority and the Six Pack Alley. She loved to go to the casino and playing bingo. In addition to her parent’s Pat was predeceased by one sister, Marilyn Borden and one brother, Jake Crowe. Harold R. Amidon Hartsville Harold R. Amidon, 84, of County Route 64, passed away Wednesday (June 3, 2015) at St James Mercy Hospital. Born in Canisteo, NY, April 14, 1931, the son of Harland and Cleva Hawkins Amidon, he had resided in Hartsville all his life. He was a graduate of Canisteo Central School, Class of 1949, and had been employed for the Erie, Erie Lackawana Railroad as well as Conrail, until his retirement in 1984 where he affectionately earned the nickname “Old Rail”. He was a member of the New York State Pageant of Steam. Harold served his country as a member of the United States Army during the Korean Conflict and was a member of the Canisteo American Legion Post. He enjoyed hunting and time spent at his cabin in Hartsville. He was well versed in Carpentry and Plumbing , and helped build homes for all his children, He enjoyed sports during high school where he received letters in four sports. This enthusiasm carried over to his adult life and he enjoyed supporting all his grandchildren in their school sport activities, and was a great supporter of all sports at the Canisteo Greenwood Central School. He enjoyed having morning coffee with his friends. He was predeceased by his parents and his daughter Betty Lou Amidon in 1966. He is survived by his wife, Harriet Curtis Amidon to whom he was married on March 31, 1951, his daughter, Vickie (James) Weyand of Kane, PA., his sons, Larry (Diane) Amidon , Randy (Shelly) Amidon and Steve (Lisa) Amidon all of Hartsville, his sisters, Ruth (Deo) Mayo of Canisteo and Carol (Dan) Lefort of Florida, his brother, Paul (Terrie) Amidon of Hartsville, his grandchildren (to whom he was affectionately called “Bompie”); Sara, Rachel, Hannah, Kyle, Danika, Alec, Craig ,Kori, Briana, Zach, Jaden, Evan, Nathan, and his seven great grandchildren. Richard D. Reynolds Wellsville Did I make a difference? Did I do enough? Richard D. Reynolds, 78, of 249 North Main Street, a longtime resident of Angelica, passed away peacefully on Tuesday (June 2, 2015) at Absolut of Houghton. Born in Dunkirk, June 27, 1936, the son of Adelbert and Elva Mae (Murrey) Reynolds, he was a graduate of the Wilsonian School in Angelica. Rich was retired from the former Angelica Central School in 1996, where he served as custodian for many years, and later retired from Genesee Valley Central School as a bus driver. He was a former member of the Angelica United Methodist Church, and the Alfred-Almond Bible Church, and currently attended the Genesis Bible Church. Rich was the former Angelica Town Clerk for many years, and was a member of the Angelica Fire Department. He enjoyed Mopar cars, but there was nothing he loved more than his family and his loving wife who predeceased him in January of 2014. He was predeceased by his parents and his wife Evelyne Morton Reynolds whom he married on July 4, 1959, his sister Edna Mae Young, and his 2 brothers Adelbert Reynolds Jr. and Edward Reynolds. He is survived by his daughter Deborah Auman of Wellsville, 2 sons Douglas Reynolds of Angelica, Bradley (Karen) Reynolds of Olean, 4 grandchildren Kari, Raymie, Nikole, and Jarrett, 4 great grandchildren. Kenneth Edward Nichols Hornell Kenneth Edward Nichols, 78, passed away Sunday (May 31, 2015) at his home surrounded by his loving family. Born in Howard, April 2, 1937, the son of Walter and Mabel Davie Nichols, he had resided most of his life in the Hornell area. Ken worked for the former Hornell Construction, Crowley’s Dairy, and at First State Bank. He was a member of the former East Ave. Methodist Church. He was an avid hunter and loved spending time on the farm where he was born. He was a supportive and proud father and grandfather. In addition to his parents Kenneth was predeceased by one daughter, Darlene Nichols, two brothers, Raymond Miner and Wilson Nichols, two sisters, Loraine Nichols and Carolyn Smith. Esther Christine Murray GRANTS PASS, OR – Esther Christine Murray, 91, passed away at Roxy Ann Memory Community, Medford, Oregon following a lengthy illness. Esther was born on July 6, 1923 in McKeesport, PA to John R. and Gertrude C. (Allen) Lofstrom. She was a 1941 graduate of McKeesport High School. After graduation she worked as a secretary at Westinghouse Electric Company. About the same time she met her future husband James at church and they were married September 17, 1943. During her lifetime they pastored several churches in Pennsylvania, New York and Alaska, including Glad Tidings Assembly of God in North Hornell from 1962 thru 1968. Esther also lived in Hornell from 1995 thru 2003. Mrs. Murray was predeceased by her loving husband the Rev. James E. Murray. She is survived by three children; James A. Murray and his wife Joy of Grants Pass, OR, Larry W. Murray and his wife Ann of Geneseo, NY and Sharon E. Heide and her husband Cliff of Everett, WA, 5 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren. Esther loved serving in ministry alongside her husband to church congregations and local communities. She played the piano and organ and led the worship music at several of the churches James pastored. She also led Vacation Bible Schools and youth groups. She had a servant’s heart and loved to care for people. Upon retirement, Esther and James moved to Alaska to be near their son Jim and family. While in Alaska they would often substitute pastor for churches in the wilderness areas for a month or two at a time. At times this would be in some isolated areas accessible only by plane. Erion Arline Clark Alfred Station Erion Arline Clark, 58, of E. Valley Rd. passed away unexpectedly June 5, 2015 at St. James Mercy Hospital. Born on December 29, 1956 in Honesdale, PA, the daughter of Alan Dirlam and Barbara (Schneckenburger) Bernstien. She had resided most of her life in the Hornell Area. She was a graduate of the Alfred-Almond Central School in 1975 and attended Alfred State College. On July 21, 1990 she married John E. Clark. She worked for Home Health Care in Hornell, for twenty-five years providing personal health care to countless people. She worked for other health care agencies prior to this including ARC and Office for the Aging in Allegany County. She was a personal care provider in her work and personal life, always taking care of everyone else in her family and her friends, stepping up to take on hard cases to make people’s lives better. She enjoyed reading and playing computer games, going to yard sales & flea markets, playing with her grandchildren. She also enjoyed spending time with her husband and children. She was preceded in death by her father Alan Dirlam, brother Arne Dirlam and grandchild Isaac Manry. Erion is survived by her husband, John E. Clark, of Alfred Station, children, Erica (Keith) Manry of Great Falls MT, Barbara Smith and Robert (Heather) Clark, both of Alfred Station, mother Barbara Bernstein, of Alfred Station, brother Kier (Lisa) Dirlam of Almond and seven grandchildren: Peigh Manry, Josiah Manry, Benjamin Manry, Clair Manry, Ethan Foreman, Kaydence Smith and Jordan Braley, special friends, Larry (Connie) Woodworth of NC., several nieces and nephews. Ken had been actively involved in the operation of his family’s business, Gardner’s Clothing Store, in Canisteo for several years. Ken was an avid skier and enjoyed spending time at their cottage on Keuka Lake. He was predeceased by his parents.
