Arlene T. Horton Hornell Arlene T. Horton, 104, formerly of West Vanscoter Street, passed awayMonday (March 30, 2015) at the Wellsville Manor. Born in the Town Of Howard, November 6, 1910, the daughter of Walter and Mary Bossard Horton, she had resided most of her life in Hornell. She had been employed at Remington Rand in Buffalo for several years. Arlene was a long time member of the United Methodist Church of Hornell. She was predeceased by her parents and all her siblings. Catherine A. Ingalls Fremont Catherine A. Ingalls, 79, of 8221 Ingalls Road, passed away unexpectedly, Tuesday (March 31, 2015) at her home. Born in Canisteo, June 18, 1935, the daughter of Frederick and Louise Slatt Pulkowsky, she had resided in the Town of Fremont since 1979. Catherine had been employed at Loohns Cleaners and for several years in the laundry at the Hornell Gardens. She was predeceased by her husband, Eric Ingalls in 1996,an infant son Eric, and her sister, Gloria Masterson. Surviving are three daughters, Elizabeth (Bill) Frasier of Filmore, Kimberly (Kevin)O’Brien of Florida and Cathy (Phil) Styles of Hornell, three sons, Michael (Vickie) Ingalls of Roulette, PA, Aden (Sandy) Ingalls of Tennessee, and Alan (Lori) Ingalls of Fremont, three sisters, Adeline Baird of Hornell, Freida Kemp of Hornell and Bernice Greenthal of North Hornell, one brother, Lewis (Teresa) Pulkowsky of Hornell, several grand and great grandchildren, nieces & nephews. Suzanne Hall-Crosby Hornell/Canisteo Suzanne Hall-Crosby, 71, of Dineen Rd., passed away Saturday (March 28, 2015) in Elmira. Born in Hornell, October 19, 1943, the daughter of Alvin and Addelaide Crosby Hall, she had resided in the Hornell area all her life. Suzanne was a home health aide before her retirement from the ARC of Steuben. She loved gardening, sewing, quilting, knitting, drawing, animals and children. In addition to her parents Suzanne was predeceased by one son, John “Jay” Skinner Jr. in 1988, two brothers, Gary and Stephen and one sister Carol. She is survived by two daughters, Lynn Skinner of Elmira and Gretchen Skinner (Bruce Smith) of Belle Haven, one granddaughter, Laura Deel, one sister, Joanne Crosby of FL. Norma J. Ralyea, 78, of 4004 Karr Valley Road, Town of West Almond, passed away April 3, 2015 in the Hart Comfort House of Wellsville after a courageous battle with ovarian cancer. Born on July 29, 1936 in Batavia New York, she was a daughter of Walter W. and Gertrude H. Courtney Whyman. Norma graduated Batavia Senior High School in 1953, and Rochester Institute of Technology with an AAS degree in Chemical Technology. On October 1, 1955 in St. James Episcopal Church, Batavia she married the love of her life, Raymond L. Ralyea, who predeceased her in November 1986. Norma loved her family and treasured every moment with her children and grand/great grandchildren. She was a kind and considerate woman with a wonderful sense of humor and was one of the nicest people you might have the pleasure to know. Norma worked during her college years at Kodak in Rochester, for many years part-time at Harris Grocery in Angelica, and was also employed by Motorola Corporation in Arcade, NY. She also worked for a short time at the Angelica Spring Factory. After the death of her husband, she worked for a short time at the Angelica Spring Factory and for several years in the Allegany County Department of Social Services , retiring in December 2000. Norma was very dedicated to her faith and loved her St. Paul’s Episcopal family. She loved gardening, quilting, birdwatching and crossword puzzles. For many years, Norma was known for her beautiful crocheted doilies and baby afghans and sweaters. She also was an excellent seamstress, sewing clothing for her family for many years and creating beautiful quilts. Norma was predeceased by her parents, her husband, two brothers (Thomas and Robert) and a sister, (Joan). Genevieve “Jean” Ann Weirich Angelica Jean A. Weirich 54 of County Rd 16 passed away Saturday April 4, 2015 at Olean General Hospital after a long courageous battle with ovarian cancer and kidney failure. Born in Scranton, PA on December 27, 1960 to Charles and Rose Smith. On April 20, 1996 she married Jim who survives and will sadly miss her. Jean worked for many years as a nurse’s aide and with their family owned business raising and breeding dogs and horses. She also did the office work for their trucking business. She loved flowers, watching the birds and spending time with her much loved family. She was kind and loving and giving to all who knew her. She was predeceased by her parents, a sister Linda, and a brother Charles In addition to her husband she is survived by 13 children. Robert “Bob” J. Reynolds Arkport Robert J. Reynolds, 70, of Apple Street, passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family on Wednesday (April 15, 2015) on Cranberry Lane in McAuley Manor, where he received excellent care. Born in Hornell, November 29, 1944, the son of Robert and Edith (Singleton) Reynolds, he was a lifelong area resident, graduating from Hornell High School “Class of 1963”. He was retired from the former Citizens Phone Company (now Frontier)Re in Alfred Station. Bob enjoyed fishing, hunting, model airplanes, roller skating of which he competed several times. He also loved to participate in restoring things such as trains, planes and automobiles. He was predeceased by his parents and a sister Patricia Guild. He is survived by his wife Donna J. (Bailey) Reynolds, whom he married on February 27, 1965, 3 daughters Belinda (Kevin) Morbe of Texas, Lucinda “Cindy” Lapek of Oklahoma, Michele (Brian) Chamberlin) of Hornell, 6 grandchildren, 6 great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, sister and brother in laws, and his 2nd family on Cranberry Lane. Anita Iona Gettys North Cohocton Anita Iona Gettys, of North Cohocton, age 66, passed away April 17, 2015 after a brief illness. She was born January 4, 1949 in Concord, NH to Iona Tenney and Leopold Proulx. She married Paul E. Gettys II on July 26, 1975 and their marriage was later solemnized in the Washington, DC Temple on April 15, 1978. They had eight children. Over the years, she and Paul welcomed many foster children into their home. They also cared for women from Finger Lakes DDSO, in their home as part of their family, for 14 years. In the latter years of their life, they cared for both of her parents, Iona and Robert Wells. Anita loved her family very much. We have many fond memories of camping at Camp Liahona in Poughkeepsie, NY. Anita loved going fishing. One of her favorite places was Skyline Drive in Virginia where she and Paul honeymooned. Each July, the family would gather for several days to visit at the Hill Cumorah Pageant in Palmyra, NY. As a couple, she and Paul volunteered their time in the Palmyra New York Temple for their church, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. She loved the Gospel of Jesus Christ and firmly believed in eternal families. Anita was predeceased by her daughter-in-law Kali (Joseph) Gettys, and is survived by her eternal companion, Paul, their children, Louann Oram, Paul (Lydia) Gettys III, Iona (Louis) Cannavino, Dan (Christa) Gettys, George Gettys, Rebekah (Troy) Shepherd, Joseph Gettys, and Denise (Josh) Shifflett. She and Paul have 17 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren. We are so grateful to have her as a wife, our mother and grandmother. Anita was laid to rest on April 20, 2015. A memorial will be held in the coming weeks. She will always be in our hearts and never forgotten. Until we meet again. Sara E. Dries – 85 – of 8616 Wilkins Rd., Arkport, NY, died early Tuesday morning (April 28, 2015, at Noyes Memorial Hospital in Dansville, following a long illness. 

Born in Talladega, AL., on May 12th, 1929, she was the daughter of Cornelius & Lillian (Walker) Williams.  

Sara grew up in Talladega and was a graduate of Talladega High School.   She has resided in the Arkport- Burns area since 1953.  Along with her husband, she owned & operated the Tri County Country Store on the Arkport-Dansville Road for over 20 years, retiring in 1989 

She was a member of Our Lady of the Valley Parish and a communicant of St. Ann’s Church.  Her true joy in life was simply taking care of her grandchildren. 

She was married in 1953 to Gerald J. Dries who died September 28, 2003. She was also preceded in death by her son, Bruce Dries who died April 3, 2014; her granddaughter, Nichole Woodvine; 3 sisters, Mildred McKinney, Linnas Ellison and Louise McKinney. 

Surviving are  2 sons, David (Sara) Dries of Auburn, Pa. and Edward (Fiamma) Dries of Italy; 1 Daughter,  Susan (Lewis) Woodvine of Arkport, N Y; 1 Brother, Waymon Williams of  Ft. Walton Beach, Fl; 16 grandchildren, Kierra Woodvine, Cassandra Woodvine, Michael Woodvine, Joseph Woodvine, David Gerald Dries, Debbie Dunkelberg; Beau Dingeldein, James Dingeldein, Jeb Dingeldein, Rhett Dingeldein, Diana Dries, Claudette Dries, Guilliane Dries, Brittany Patterson, Nick Dries and Tim Dries;  8 great-grandchildren, Allison, Brynn, Devyn, Ethan, Owen, Mason, Nicholas & Erica; several nieces & nephews. 

The family of Sara E. Dries will receive friends on Friday from 4:00 PM – 6:00 PM at the Dagon Funeral Home where a Memorial Service will be held at the conclusion of calling hours at 6:00 PM with Deacon Robert McCormick officiating.  Final interment will be in the Bath National Cemetery. 

Sara’s family request that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in her name be made to the American Cancer Society, 13 Beech St., Johnson City, NY 13790.  Memorial forms will be available at the Dagon Funeral Home.

Betty Anne Mullen Almond Betty Anne Mullen, went to be with her Lord and Savior, one day before her 74th birthday on April 29, 2015. Betty Anne was born on April 30,1941 to Donald W. Lowe and Dorothy E. (Winters) Lowe in Rochester, NY. Betty Anne graduated from East High School in 1959, after graduation she then relocated to Almond, NY. In July 1960 she became the beloved wife of Roger W. Mullen, together they had 4 children, Laurie Anne (Gene) Polasik of Bainbridge, NY, Jeffrey Carl Mullen of Almond, NY , Roger “Jamie” Mullen (whom predeceased her in 1973) and Mark Roger (Heidi) Mullen of Germany. Betty Anne is survived by her 2 sisters (Nancy Lewis and Donna Hoffman) and 1 brother, Donald Lowe. Betty Anne was the proud grandmother of Elizabeth,Julia and Amanda Polasik, Michael and Eric Mullen, and Zoe Mullen. In addition to her brothers and sister in laws, several nieces and nephews, she was predeceased by her aunts and uncles. Betty Anne worked as a secretary for Gunlocke Corporation, Alfred University and Almond Union of Churches. She also ran her own gift shop business for several years, which included making lawn ornaments. She was a Member of The Loyal Order Women of the Moose since 1974; holding many offices , as well as a member of The Almond Union of Churches. Her hobbies were crocheting, knitting, refinishing furniture, painting, remodeling, siding houses, decorating cakes and any thing she set her mind too. Betty Anne’s favorite things were spending time with her loved ones, watching NASCAR, traveling, reading and watching movies. Norma L. Young Almond Norma L. Young, 58, of 15 Main Street, passed away peacefully, Saturday (May 2, 2015) at Highland Hospital in Rochester, after a courageous battle with cancer. Born in Hornell, November 6, 1956, the daughter of Orman and Patricia (Gee) Young, she was a lifelong area resident, graduating from Hornell High School. Norma had worked various jobs throughout her life, the last being at Smitty’s in Wayland. She enjoyed cooking, but her true accomplishment in life was being the best, mother, grandmother, daughter and sister a person could ever ask for. She truly enjoyed every minute she could, with her family. She was predeceased by her father Orman Young, her grandson Joseph Turner, and a niece Mary Jo Hill. She is survived by her mother Patricia “Pat” (Richard) Davison of Canaseraga, her daughter Angela (Jason) Turner of Almond, her son James Racalto of Hornell, 3 grandchildren Brandon Drake of Jasper, Nicholas Turner of Almond, Alyssa Turner of Almond, a step grandson Joshua Turner of Hornell, her former husband and friend Anthony Racalto of Hornell, 3 sisters Rebecca (Jeff) Robinson of Rochester, Sandra Kinnerney of Almond, Julie Pierce of Hornell, 3 brothers Randall (Linda) Young of Hornell, David Young of Bath, Richard Davison Jr. of Canaseraga, her beloved 4-legged companion “Petey” , and several nieces, nephews and cousins. Michael J. Cole Canisteo Michael J. Cole, 50, of 45 West Main Street, passed away Friday (May 1, 2015) at Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester. Born in Hornell, June 8, 1964, the son of Robert and Linda Willey Cole, he had resided in the Canisteo area all his life. He was a graduate of Canisteo Central School and was employed in the Maintenance Department at Alfred State College. Mike was an all around “Fix It Man”, who could fix or repair anything. He was an avid photographer, and had a knack for sensing the perfect shot resulting in a perfect photo. Agnes Rose Comes Almond Agnes Rose Comes, 79, of State Route 21, passed away Monday (May 4, 2015) at Jones Memorial Hospital in Wellsville surrounded by her family. Born in Albany March 11, 1936, the daughter of Carl and Lottie Worner Meyer, she had resided in Almond for 55 years. Agnes was a graduate of Alfred State College with a degree in horticulture and was owner, operator and designer of Comes Greenhouse in Almond. She attended Almond Union of Churches and was a member of the Almond Historical Society, 20th Century Club and had a passion for cooking, flowers, her family as well as her extended family. Agnes loved her greenhouse work and could hardly wait to get out in the morning and has given hundreds of cherry tomatoes to children to plant. She demonstrated to many clubs how to arrange and cut wild flowers, as well as making terrariums and herb gardens. She designed planters using both perennials and annuals for her many customers. In addition to her parents she was predeceased by her son, James Comes in 2008. She is survived by husband James Comes to whom she was married on June 29, 1957, one son, Joe (Sandy) Comes of Buffalo, one daughter, Cindy (John) Ketz of Rocky Hill CT, One brother, Carl (Mary) Meyer of Albany, one sister, Margie Kaufman of Albany, four grandchildren, Nick, Michael, Patrick and Jonathon, Daughter-in-law Michelle Comes of Wellsboro, PA, brother-in-law John (Julie) Comes of Smethport, special friend Adrienne (Keith) Stanley of Almond as well as several nieces and nephews. Mary R. Fucci

Mary R. Fucci, beloved mother & grandmother passed away peacefully early Tuesday morning (May 5, 2015) at her home — the same home in which she was born 100 years ago.  She celebrated her 100th birthday this year with family & friends at a party given in her honor last month at The Main Place in Hornell.

A lifelong resident of Hornell, Mary was born on April 8, 1915, and was the daughter of Leonard & Amelia (Canella) Caruso. 

Mary attended Hornell High School and was a member of Our Lady of the Valley Parish and a communicant of St. Ann’s Church.  She had been a member of the Catholic Daughters of America.

In the early 1960’s, Mary established Fucci’s Pizza Villa in Hornell making her one of the first female business owners in Hornell.  She owned and operated the business until 1977.  She later was employed as a cook for the Masonic Senior Nutrition Program and also served as a volunteer in the Grandparent Program in the elementary schools in the Hornell School District.

Mary was dearly beloved and greatly respected by her children, her family and all that were blessed to know her.  She was a very loving and respectful woman who will be greatly missed by all.

She was married in 1935 to Anthony Fucci who died in 1952.  Mary was also preceded in death by her daughter, Clara Fucci (who died at the age of three); her son, Michael Fucci (died 2012); her grandson, Michael Dempsey (died 1983); her son-in-law, Lawrence Dempsey(died 1990); 4 brothers, Anthony Caruso, Angelo Caruso, Sam “Tato” Caruso and Richard Caruso; 2 sisters, Jenny Marendo and Nancy Guchardi.

Surviving are 3 daughters, Amelia Dempsey of Hamburg, Marjorie (Jim) Blowers of Swain and Maria Ormsby of Brick, NJ; 1 son, Leonard (Diane) Fucci of Hornell; her daughter-in-law, Linda Fucci of Hornell; 10 grandchildren, Kathleen Dempsey, Larry Dempsey, Colleen Carrow, Anthony Fucci, Lisa Smith, James Blowers, Mary Clark, Bernadette Hunter, Tina Ormsby and Brittany Broderick; 10 great-grandchildren who dearly loved her and called her “Big Ma”; many nieces & nephews.

The family of Mary R. Fucci will receive friends on Thursday from 4:00 PM  until  7:00 PM at the
Dagon Funeral Home, 38 Church St., Hornell, NY.  A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday at 10:00 AM at St. Ann’s Church with burial in St. Ann’s Cemetery.

Mary’s family request that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in her name be made to St. Ann’s Academy, PO Box 446, Hornell, NY 14843.  Memorial forms will be available at the Dagon Funeral Home.

William L. Acker Bolivar William L. Acker, 64, of 116 Olean Street, passed away Saturday (May 2, 2015) in Zephyrhills, Florida. Born in Hornell, October 27, 1950, the son of Lawrence and Margaret Brown Acker, he had resided in Canisteo during his early life but most of his life in Wellsville. Bill had resided in Bolivar since 1978.He was a graduate of Wellsville High School and had been employed as a manager at both Carpet Town in Weston Mills and later at Custom Carpets in Olean. Bill served his country as a member of the United States Air Force from 1971 until 1975. He was active in sports during high school and remained actively involved in his son’s sports activity thru high school and college. He was a member of the Bolivar Lions Club and the Bolivar American Legion Post. He was predeceased by his parents. He is survived by his wife, Sally Raykovitz Acker of Bolivar, his daughter: Jamie Acker Lewis of Rochester , his son, Aaron and his wife, Kristin Mekjean Acker of Buffalo, his sister, Patricia (Tom) Cline of Wellsville, and his brother, Robert Acker of Hornell, his grandchildren, Ayedin Lewis, Kamdyn Lewis and Adina Acker, several nieces and nephews. Catherine L. Sweet Canisteo Catherine L. Sweet, 67, of 29 Pine Street, passed away Friday (May 1, 2015) at Jones Memorial Hospital in Wellsville. Cathy was born in Rochester, October 16, 1947, and was the daughter of Walter and Edna Sanford Randall. She had resided in New Hampton, NY before returning to Canisteo in July of 2014.She had attended Canisteo Central School and had been employed in hotel housekeeping in the New Hampton area. She was predeceased by her parents and one brother, Lennie Randall. She is survived by her daughters, Sandra Hargrave Woodworth (Mickey) of Greenwood and Dawn Fisher Claflin (Brian) of Tennessee, her sons, William Hargrave of Clinton, NY and Warren “Joey” Hargrave III of Avoca, her brothers, William (Sara) Randall of Canisteo, Ronald (Jodie) Randall of Hornell and Robert (Rhonda) Randall of Canisteo, her sister, Bonnie Moore of California, 9 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren, nieces & nephews. Evelyn A. Brandt “Evie” “Granny” Angelica/Friendship Evelyn A. Brandt passed away peacefully in her sleep May 5, 2015, at the age of 86. She was born on February 28, 1929, the daughter of Arthur Robert and Ruth (TwarDokus) Watkins. Evie was an antique dealer for many years and could often be seen chatting with customers at the Angelica country store. She was predeceased by her parents, her husband Donald W. Brandt, her grandson Derek P. Ward, and her daughter Donalyn R. Johnson. Evie is survived by her daughers Darlene (Dan) Ward, Deborah Holtz (Bill Reynolds), her grandsons Donald (Leah) Ward, Arthur Holtz, 3 great grandchildren Brianna, Haylea, and Mitchell, nieces, and nephews.
